It's Holy Week, so expect to see plenty of films about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Some are fantastic, some are ridiculous, and some are on the border. Here some of films you might seen on TV this week.
The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965)
Epic classic Hollywood movie with Max Von Sydow as Jesus. Unfortunately, Jesus would forever be depicted in movies as a European.
Godspell (1973)
Based on the popular musical, “Godspell” is a fun way of retelling the Gospel using a modern day setting. Victor Garber’s Jesus has an afro, bright red suspenders, and a Superman S on his shirt. Far out.
While not as graphic as “The Passion of the Christ,” this version of Jesus before Pilate is still powerful. Just look at those eyes!
The Jesus Film (1979)
Not really a film, per say. This was basically created by the guy who found Campus Crusade for Christ as a way to tell people about Jesus. Skip this one.
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
It’s not based on the Gospels, but on the fictional Nikos Kazantzakis novel. It’s still stirs up controversy. Still a very well-made film with a great soundtrack by Peter Gabriel.
Yeah, this is why I don’t recommend the 1999 “Jesus” movie.
The Miracle Maker (2000)
Produced by the BBC, this stop-motion animated film features Ralph Fiennes doing a marvelous job doing the voice of Jesus. It’s funny to hear Peter with a Scottish accent, but still a great movie nonetheless.
I thought I’d spare you all all the graphic whipping scenes and just post the trailer.
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
While not entirely biblically correct, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical includes such memorable songs as “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Superstar.” Ted Neely makes Jesus look like wimp, though.
Probably the most recognizable song from “Godspell.”
Jesus of Nazareth (1977)
Franco Zeffirelli’s classic all-star miniseries features Robert Powell as Jesus (he never blinks!), Anne Bancroft as Mary Magdelene, Olivia Hussey as Mother Mary, Ernest Borgnine as the Roman centurion, and Michael York as John the Baptist. Beautifully filmed.
Yes, “The Jesus Film” is mostly narration.
This is a clip from “The Last Temptation of Christ.” The “Oh, Jesus” line is pretty funny, you have to admit.
Jesus (1999)
I’ve only seen bits and pieces of this one, but what I’ve seen isn’t very impressive. It ends with Jesus walking around in modern clothes surrounded by kids while LeAnn Rimes sings in the background. Not a good sign!
Moby does not appear on “The Miracle Maker” soundtrack, but this mash-up is the only video I could find.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Probably the most infamous Jesus movie ever. On one hand, it is basically torture porn. The movie goes into so much detail about Jesus’ suffering but hardly mentions anything about His ministry. But on the other hand, it did get a lot of people talking about the Gospel.
How about Jesus' followers in "Jesus Camp"
Scary stuff.
