Some people watch TMZ or E! to see their stars, but my celebrities can all be found on one channel, the Food Network. So when the Next Food Network Star finale aired this week, my utensils were crossed for a Jeffrey Saad win. His show, Ingredient Smuggler, would have showcased exotic ingredients from all over the world. I know, amazing. Although sadly he only ended up with a second place ribbon. So in hopes that they create his show anyway (a girl can dream), here are a few exotic/not commonly used ingredients that I'd love to see Jeffrey explore. What exotic ingredients are your taste buds curious about?

l the Food Network is making plans to have him on air in the future!

Pu'Erh Tea

I would love to see how he would use bits of this Chinese tea that is pressed into a cake shape and aged. It’s earthy flavor might be nice infused into a sauce for poultry or even as a spice rub. But, I’ll leave that up to the expert.

Pawpaw Fruit

According to a lucky blogger who tasted the pawpaw (which apparently tastes like a cross between a mango and a banana), the Pawpaw is the “U.S.’s largest edible native fruit. But because they have a short shelf-life, they were never cultivated, so we don’t hear about them.”

That sounds like an absolutely delicious flavor combination!!

I’m sure it would a great smoothie ingredient!

Oooh yes it would. It reminds me of a Dole fruit juice.

I have a hard time watching reality TV show contests when the seasons are over…. I guess I’ll have to wait for next season!

Black Truffles

One of my favorite taste sensations ever! I’ve experienced pasta infused with truffle and truffle fries, but would like to learn how to incorporate this decadent ingredient into my own culinary repertoire.

Ahhh my mouth is watering right now. I just need to make a little bit more money so I can afford these delicious morsels.

they are so expensive! I LOVE mushroom sauce with fresh truffle and cheese over homemade pasta!

Haha perhaps we can work out a deal with Guidespot?

Lychee

I’ve seen this fragrant fruit used in cocktails, but have never tasted it in a dish.

I love desserts made with lychee—like lychee ice cream! Yum.

Dragon Fruit

Though I’ve had the dragon fruit Vitamin Water a million times, I just realized I’ve never actually tasted or seen a real dragon fruit. How pretty! I really must find one now!

Aged Black Garlic

Oh wow, I never even knew this existed and I’m kind of excited about it.

That would be perfect for a sweet tomato sauce served over pasta.

let the black garlic search begin!

Whole Cacao Bean

I’ve heard that it can be rather hard to grind cacao beans with convention kitchen tools. So I wonder what he could teach me to do?

Hm….is it sweet??

619078008
by alexis  09/09/2009

Not when it’s raw. I’ve tasted a raw cacao bean and it kind of tastes like olive oil. ha, bad description.

Kobe Beef

A few years ago I sampled a Kobe Beef carpaccio dish at a Japanese restaurant in NYC. I’m anxious to use this ingredient in my own kitchen.

Chestnut Jam

I love Chesnuts. I love jam. I am sure I would LOVE chestnut jam.

I think I would love this, no doubt about it- where do I get it?!

by alexis  09/09/2009

I’m searching for it…because I can’t live without it…

WIld Ramps

Pummelo

Kumquat

Tamarind

The pulp of this East African Bean Pod is known to add a duo of sweet and sour tastes to a dish.

Jicama

Okay, I know it’s basically just a turnip, and not all that exotic in that sense, but I’ve never used jicama. And seeing as though I live down the road from produce-central Chinatown, I should really get on that. I want to buy produce I can’t even identify at all, and then go home, google and find recipes!

yeah right. knowing you, alicia, you would instead name the produce and crochet it a scarf.
