Best Imaginary Friends

Ok, so over the three Christmas dinners, a few very interesting conversations came up. One such conversation involved all of the "older folks" talking about the "younger folks" past imaginary friends. Now, you may think that some character someone made up when they were five would have no bearing on a 28 yr. old's life . . . but when the imaginary friend's name was mentioned, the semi-adult's face would get a far-off look, then a look of recollection, then a twinkle would inevitably enter the eye . . . everyone still fondly remembers their imaginary friends! So who were yours, and what did they look like?

Mexic

This little rascal was a good friend of my boyfriend’s nephew. He seemed fun-loving if not a little hyper-active. No one has any idea where his name came from.

The guys from "Chips" and Strawberry Shortcake...

…came out of the medicine cabinet to talk to me while I went to the bathroom.

Yeah.

I don’t get it either.

Typhoonagator!!!!

Ok, there was this book, One Monster After Another, and it was my FAVORITE book when I was little. After reading about the Typhoonagator, a monster who sucked up everything and then spit it out all over the place, I decided that this would be the ULTIMATE imaginary friend.

Dad: “Karey Ann, were you messing with my tool bench?”

Karey Ann: “It wasn’t me, it was Typhoonagator!!”

Mom: “Oh my God! What happened to your little brother’s hair? Is this egg?”

Karey Ann: “Mom, I don’t know what happened! Typhoonagator did it.”

A five year-old stroke of genius . . .

A sullen fellow who didn’t like apples, or crust on his sandwiches. The brainchild of a young relative who, coincidentally, wouldn’t eat his fruit cup.

Childhood Memories

My neighbor had a row of six foot tall bushes between his house and the next. We found some hollowed out spots in the bushes and used to sit in there for hours pretending it was a cockpit and all the branches were the levers. We would fly with Maverick and Goose while shooting down Ice Man.

Charlie Kooky

This was my boyfriend’s friend, Charlie Kooky! Charlie Kooky didn’t like the freeway and my boyfriend would force his parents to take backroads on Charlie’s behalf. He says that Charlie Kooky looked like Alfalfa from The Little Rascals. But I think . . . .

Charlie Kooky looked more like this.

Kirkendall

A 40somethings Aunt’s made-up friend that she still remembered . . . a warrior for justice and freedom from parental tyranny.

Worms

I had imaginary pet worms instead of an imaginary friend.

Yeah…I don’t get it either.

Dot

Not only was Dot imaginary, she was also invisible, so no picture will accompany this text. So, I’m a strange bird: when I was little (9 or 10?), I realized that a lot of people had imaginary friends and I didn’t. It wasn’t that I was jealous, but I specifically remember thinking, “When I grow up, will I regret not having an imaginary friend? I would probably want that memory, so I’m going to conjure up an imaginary friend!” I could only speak to Dot sitting on the radiator in my bedroom, which looked out into our backyard. I think I would talk to her (or myself).

Skeeter

OK, so I didn’t have my own imaginary friend, but I made one up for my dog. And he always looked something like this. Super cute, little, and energetic. My sister and I would always ask my dog how Skeeter was, what he was doing, etc. etc. We once had a birthday party for my dog and invited Skeeter too. What a fabulous friend Skeeter was.
