The No-Poo Theory
Yes, you heard it right. It is called No-Poo and it means you STOP using shampoo.
Hey, I can see your face right now, and you look disgusted… Listen, I haven’t used shampoo in four years, and it is the best hair decision I have ever made.
Curly hair is naturally dry, that is why it curls! We think we need shampoo to keep our hair and scalp clean, but we are actually washing our precious locks with harsh drying sulfates that are not good for curly hair. Would you ever use your dish soap on your hair? The harsh ingredients in most shampoos strip your scalp and hair of moisture, and makes curly hair frizzy and unmanageable. This is where the No-Poo concept comes into place…
Replace your shampoo and mediocre
conditioner for a cleansing conditioner. Try no-poo’ing your hair for a couple weeks and watch your curls transform. If the idea of not using shampoo grosses you out, then try not washing your hair as often, or restrict yourself to only shampooing your hair once a week.
The infamous Devachan salon in NY helped the no-poo concept go mainstream with their luscious conditioning products. This is my favorite, One Conditioner.
Ask for a Dry Haircut
To give you a better cut for your curl, most curl specialists will cut your hair when it is dry.
Don't Brush It
Conditioners should work well enough that you can use your hands to separate the tangles. Brushes are hard on curly heads.
Soak it Up
Let your hair soak up the products, and use a paper towel instead of a towel for scrunching.
Hidden Curls
When your hair is drying, take the tight curls that are behind your neck and stretch them to the curls in the front with a clip. This will help make the tight curly-Q’s stretch out with the length of your hair.

So glad to hear someone else advertise the virtues of a shampoo-free lifestyle – I’ve got coarse, wavy hair (…not quite curly, not quite straight, VERY hard to tame), and yep, the BEST decision I ever made was to nix the shampoo. My hair is happier!
