I think you meant.....???

Being that I'm a writer, I'm obsessed with words. I've always been like this, even when I was a little kid. Learning a new word was like having a slice of cake. Ok, maybe not that good but somewhere close. I would read the dictionary when I was bored and thesaurus' were like my version of Harry Potter. So, when I hear someone talking and they use a beautiful little word, INCORRECTLY, unless we're really close I never correct them....but I always want to. What are some words you've heard people use that are ALL WRONG??? Out of context? Or simply nonexistent?

"Wonder Woman is so PREROGATIVE"

A common misuse

EXPECIALLY.

EX-PECIALLY?? Really, pretty sure that isn’t a word.

Especially is though.

And while I’m at it, EXPRESSO isn’t right either. It’s ES-presso.

My good friend used to say......

“For all intensive purposes”

INSTEAD OF

“For all intents and purposes”…………….which is the correct term.

We’re not friends anymore.

I think she meant.......

PROVOCATIVE???

The other day when searching for a costume for my twelve year old sister, the girl at the costume store was trying to help me grab something “appropriate” for her age. When I told her she was going to wear the costume to school and that she was 12, she said….

“OH! Well, we’ll have to look at the kid Wonder Woman costumes, cause the adult Wonder Woman costumes are reallly PREROGATIVE……”

She went on to say that a few times and I, of course, didn’t correct her.

Com-PROMISE vs. COM-promise

Someone whom I love dearly and therefore shall remain nameless always seems to mispronounce this word.  Brain fart?  Sure.  We all have ’em.

But that same (did I mention smart and lovely?) person also makes a more puzzling gaffe: pronouncing the word recluse as “reckless”.  Which really makes no sense whatsoever.

Have you ever been "taken for granite?"

…..I doubt it. Though, you may have been taken for GRANTED.

I'm infactuated with this guide

While true, unfortunately infactuated is not a word…

I have a friend who says that though…kind of drives me crazy.

Your and you're & Their, there, and they're

When people mess up the usage of these basic words, it irks me! Especially when people do this wrong when sending text messages. Unless you’re learning english as a 4th language or something, it’s your fault if you don’t know by now. It was one of the first things that we were taught in school.

There are problems in this world greater than the grammatical error, but please! Get the basics right!

Use some Crick water to Warsh the car!

My parents both live in Northern Northern Northern Montana. If they walk to the street in front of their house they are practically in Canada. I never thought they (or I) talked funny until moving to California and being ridiculed by friends. Apparently when you are camping and need to take a bath you jump in the CREEK as opposed to the CRICK.Once in the creek you WASH yourself as opposed to WARSH yourself.
I’ve broken the WARSH habit, but I’m holding on to CRICK. Gots to stay strong to my roots!

as a fellow word nerd, this post sent me back to moments (that I thought i tucked deep away in my mind) where friends blatantly butchered the english language. I am considering letting out a shattering scream the next time I hear language abuse. maybe that will wake up the verbal abuser. drastic? yes. but not for a word nerd.
