You there! Step away from the Cheesecake Factory! There are a ton of delicious places to eat around here that you can't find any place else. For instance...

How to Find What I'm Talking About

Poor House Bistro

91 S Autumn St, San Jose, CA 95110

Having never been to New Orleans, my experience with Cajun food hews pretty closely to a box of Zatarain’s Red Beans and Rice. As such, I have no idea if this food is authentic, I only know that it is EXCELLENT. Their big focus is on their Po’ Boy sandwiches, and you can get a variety of hot or cold. I’m partial to the fried catfish Po’Boy. They also do a Sunday brunch with a Jambalaya scrambled that will make you wish you had discovered this place sooner. Also, if you’re going…get an order of the wings. Not to be missed.

Southern Kitchen

3378 Monterey Hwy, San Jose, CA 95111

A deeply greasy place that makes fantastic breakfasts. I dig on their pancake options, but I am lead to believe that they have a wealth of Mexican options like a Chili Verde omelet that is supposedly out of this world. The portions are huge, and you can get a ton of sides with your egg dishes, so plan on taking some home with you.

Bertucelli's La Villa

1319 Lincoln Ave, San Jose, CA 95125

A fantastic little Italian deli in Willow Glen. The big draw is for their raviolis which you can get either uncooked in the refrigeration case, or all cooked and sauced on their steam table. They also have an assortment of fantastic sandwiches, including their worst kept secret: The Chris Combo. While it’s not on the menu, there are signs for it all over the place. The ingredients are secret, but there are a few kinds of meats, a couple of cheeses, mayo and spices all warmed up and made delicious. It gets crowded on the weekends, and it’s not open on Sunday or Monday, but it’s worth the wait.

Taiwan Restaurant-Willow Glen

1306 Lincoln Ave, San Jose, CA 95125

Pretty fantastic Chinese Food across the board. They do a great job with the staples, though I’m not thrilled with their chow mien (go with the chow fun instead) and their fried rice. Their specials are pretty fantastic. The Wok Seared Scallion Beef Filet is out of control good.

They do great takeout (no delivery unfortunately), but it’s worth eating there a few times to get the full Taiwan Restaurant experience. They do some fantastic things with presentation, including serving the egg rolls in tiny brown paper shopping bags in a little shopping cart. Too cute.
