How to Use Myspace: The Good and The Bad
When I made that decision to switch from LiveJournal to Myspace, I had no idea that years later I would have created entire epic drama's, friendships, job opportunities, etc. through this "little website." I created a profile without much thought and now, I spend hours at a time changing fonts and deciding which friends are currently most deserving of the "TOP FRIENDS." It's a tricky, twisty little world and I'd like to show you how it can be used, for good and for bad....
Could be used for both good AND bad: YOUR PROFILE SONG
There was a little while when I was in a “Myspace” war with my ex and his ex girlfriend….I was the first ex, she was the second. I also had a few years on her, so technically….I had already won. Because my ex and I were trying to work things out, she insisted on adding a NEW profile song EVERYDAY about how heartbreaking and dark her life had gotten since he left…..and then she’d choose songs with lines like, “I’ll do anything to get you back” etc. etc.
Needless to say, this is a SNEAKY way of using the power of your PROFILE SONG.
Sure, music is expression and it should express how you’re feeling but if you continue to put up songs by Conor Oberst, A Fine Frenzy or Rosie Thomas, people may put you on suicide watch. Chill out with the sad tunes……
While she wallowed, I decided to put up “Golden” by Jill Scott. Was it tempting to put up “Misery Business” by Paramore just to rub it in her face? Sure….but hey, I like to keep it classy.
Colie Caillat was the number one Myspace page for unsigned artists....
which, got her signed.
If "Rehab" is your profile song....
you may have a problem.
The Good: Music Pages
For musicians it’s a very tricky time. Hardly any record labels are signing anymore, and if they are it’s only AFTER you’ve done most of the work. The days of “development deals” are long gone, you are expected to be DEVELOPED.
Myspace has been an INCREDIBLE tool for bands and singers, rappers and dj’s to get the word out about their music. The best part; its easy. You put up your music and let it go from there, it’s amazing how word spread when you’ve got good tunes. Look at Colbie Caillat or One Republic who really got their “big break” from this site!
Speaking of One Republic, the guitar player Drew Brown was a good friend of mine who lived with my best friend, we bummed around and lived off canned food in Los Angeles and BAM, literally…..overnight, his band was HUGE.
Both good and bad: YOUR PROFILE PICTURE
Do you choose your profile picture wisely??? Or are you one of those people that puts up a picture of their shirtless torso? Or a “crazy night” out with your girlfriends, where you all look like semi-street hookers who got a hold of a bottle of whiskey?
Tagging Unflattering Pics of Others
…I’ve been tagged by others in Myspace pictures, which – unlike Facebook – mercifully asks you if you’d like to own up to the tag. Well, not in this case. I’m not an incredibly vain person, I just don’t want people to be staring so far up my nostrils that they glimpse brain, or the mid-shout picture that gives the illusion of multiple chins. I would also prefer not to be pictured with exes if I can help it. Is that so terrible?
I wouldn’t tag either one personally.
