Wether you plan on buying a Chanel bag, or just wanna wipe the smirk off the face of the haughty girl carrying one, here are the rules, tips, and give aways to distinguishing between authentic and knock off designer bags.

Most Counterfeited Brand: Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton bags are beautiful and hand crafted. They are also very expensive and desired. These four simple characteristics make Louis Vuitton bags the most counterfeited brand. First and simply: Never buy a Louis Vuitton bag with a price tag that is to good to be true. Fact is, it is to good, and therefor not true. Another tip for buying Louis Vuitton is the handles are never ever wrapped in plastic, and tags, zippers, and keychains will never ever be wrapped in tissue. Now those are some tips for buying. For spotting a fake LV, it can be very easy. LV bags are made from one piece of continuous fabric. If you see a bag with a seem at the bottom, or down both of the sides, it is a fake. Also, if the letters and patterns don’t match up on the sides, or the LV logo is upright on both sides, it’s a knock off. Quality is also something that Louis Vuitton bags can guarantee. If the piping is not leather, the handles are a different color than the piping, the seams are uneven or frayed, or the monogram starts to peel, it’s most definately a fake!

Along the seam on the side of this bag, the patterns and letters don’t match up. This indicates a fake LV bag.

Chanel, Who Could Resist?

Number one thing to know when tying to buy a real Chanel bag, they are NOT shrink wrapped. The metal tags attachted to it will not be shrink wrapped, or wrapped in any plastic or tissue. Also check the tag inside, all Chanel bags are made in Italy. Not France or the U.S.A. Another thing to look for is the coloring. The bag will either be black on black, black on white, or black on pink; beige does not exist in the Chanel bag world! [off white does in some designs] Niether do skinny double C’s, that is one way to tell with all those girls at school. ;)

Beige and shrink wrapped… you tell me! Real or Fake? :)

Gorgeous Gucci, or Fauxy Fake?

Like with Louis, be prepared to spend some money on one a’ these. Never purhcase a Gucci bag that is a deal. Cause 98% of me guarantees it isn’t the real deal. Again, these never come with any part wrapped or tissue papered. Study the real double G logo, and make sure it matches the one on the bag you want to buy. If the logo i slightly off, doesn’t from a full G, or they G’s go in opposite directions, it is a fake. Also make sure the logo is on the inside of the bag and on the zippers. The purse will also come with a card of authenticity. Quailty is a good way to tell as well. Flimsy and foldable bags will not be a real Gucci. Frayed seams and sewing, peeling letters, and the monogram falling off is for sure a huge red flag.

First red flag, not even the right font!

Only The Devil Wears FAKE Prada

How to tell: stichting, stitching, stitching! Prada bags are impeccably made and sewn. Cheap looking stitching that looks like it was done quickly and unevenly indicates a fake Prada. The label and logo of Prada has become very well imitated. With the brand you are going to have to know your Prada logo! Check for different fonts, make sure it is a triangle shape, and uppercase letters only. Some fake bags will have “bubbles” or open circles in the corners of the triangle. Authentic bags have “studs.” [for lack of better words] Again, no plastic wrapping and tissue paper will be used.

Cheap looking, plastic wrapped, and has those “bubbles” at the corners of the logo’s triangle.

Kate Spade or Not?

Kate Spade’s unfortunately have a notorious reputation for being imitated. And some of the knock off’s are so obvious that it’s almost funny. They look cheap and poorly made, two opposite characteristics of the real thing. Look for labels that have been sewn or glued on. Kate Spade bags always have her name embossed on the side. Don’t buy purses with a black stripe on top, camouflage, sunflowers, tie-dye or prints with the faces of celebrities. Those are the most common fakes for some reason, and very far off from the authentic Kate Spade. Also check for metal “studs” or metal pointy things [haha] on the bottom of the square purses. This indicates a fake!

Sewn on Logo and fat stitching indicate this Kate, is a Fake!

Finally:

I don’t want to come across as a snob in this one, but fake designer bags and knock offs are a no good business. First off, they are technically illegal for infringment on copyrights. Secondly, they are made by children in sweatshops. Buying these fakes are only supporting child labor in foreign countries. And Thirdly, invest in something that will last. Buying a fake will, in the long run, cost you more when it breaks in a couple of months and you need to buy a new one. The real deal will last and last, and only supports the toughest industry around, the fashion one.

I read somewhere that in Paris they fine the person who owns a fake bag. Suppose it is a good way to discourage people from buying them.
