How To Find Your Romeo While Reading Casanova In New York

D_jm5woxfcno2quemqwqgw

Finding a decent date in Manhattan can get tricky. In most cases, meeting someone over a stiff martini in a shady bar doesn't turn out well. Especially when daylight comes and you realize that sexy tattoo that looked like Latin in candlelight, really said his ex-girlfriends name. However, stumbling upon someone you can talk literature with over an espresso while in close quarters, surrounded by love stories- is far more promising. Take a break, grab a book and start skimming the aisles.

12th Street Books

11 E 12TH ST NEW YORK, NY 10003

Though small in size, the store is abounding with all types of literature. A bit cramped and cozy, you feel like you’ve stumbled upon something secret. Plus, physically “BUMPING INTO” someone happens frequently, you just have to hope that they’re sexy. I wouldn’t suggest however bumping into the employees cause we want to avoid getting kicked out of bookstores for gropping, not that I would know- I’m just sayin’.

Mystery buffs, you are not alone. Or, you’re not as creepy as I thought you were- after visiting this book store I discovered, my inner Sherlock.

Lord knows I don’t need another NYU-er asking if I can “spare him some cash” for a jar of peanut butter. Just be aware.

Three Lives and Company

154 W 10TH ST NEW YORK, NY 10014

A quiet neighboorhood haven, this bookstore has charm and an incredibly helpful staff, example: When I saw the clerk chatting with an attractive “regular” I asked her for his name and she gladly divulged the info to enable my stalker mission. Not only did I follow the mission, I ended up chatting with this sexy stranger later in the evening at his band’s show. High five to me. Still waiting for date number two…

If you are into the LARGE bookstores, this one will suffice, without having to go to Barnes and Noble. There’s a unique library feel, with big wooden book cases and secret corners made for smoochin’. Obviously. May I suggest parking yourself in the Food & Wine section, any conversation with a man that can COOK and has some knowledge of his wines will make for a good date. Or dating a cook may make for a fat ass? But either way, happiness and full bellies are involved.

Strand Bookstore

828 BROADWAY NEW YORK, NY 10003

Strand is the MECCA of bookstores. Strand would win in the ring, if it were up against Barnes and Noble or Borders. Strand, is a heavy weight champ. Strand also knows that poor people enjoy a good novel just as much as the rich folks, and the $1 bookshelves are indeed helpful if you’re on a budget. Pack a lunch, spend the day, sell your books and discover new ones. The best part is buying the books that say “not for sale” that are released early by publishers. After I bought “Sex and Bacon” by Sarah Katherine Lewis for a solid buck, I had the perfect book with a title that led t many conversation starters…“So what exactly IS Sex and Bacon about…” and everyone always likes an excuse to talk about sex, I prefer chatting about bacon.

Brooklyn folks have this whole, “I’m from Brooklyn” snobbishness that bugs the crap out of me. They’re artists so they “must be from Brooklyn.” Well combine that with people who believe they are intellectually superior because they read five million books a day, and there’s all sorts of cold-shoulders. The upside is, if you dig the intellectual who wants to recite poetry to you at an indie coffee shop while bitching about all things corporate- you can find your guy here. Just don’t expect him to be interested in who’s on the cover of US Weekly….and yes, I know this from experience. I asked a guy I was dating, “Angelina or Jenn?? Which team are you on?” and he said, “Who?”

A charming independent bookstore always gets me, I would date the bookstore if that were socially acceptable and the best part about THIS bookstore are all of the author talks and signings. So yeah, you may not date them but listening to someone with a brain talk about their “fancy” new publication is inspiring nonetheless. Stick around for TEA and scones- alone. If you’ve ever had tea with a dude you’ll realize it’s not as dainty when they’re bumbling about for a cube of sugar while holding a dainty porcelin. Actually, it’s a bit adorable.
