How To Be A Groupie In NYC

-620782768

That's right, I'm encouraging smutty behavior, call me an enabler. What can I say, I have a thing for people that can sing me to sleep and rock out on the guitar. I happen to be a musician myself and you would be shocked at the amount of groupies that are actually out there. They're not a myth. Groupies are no Big Foot. So, whether you want to BE one, or you'd like to know how they operate let me give you a little insight....though they may be "easy" these people are no joke, follow the rules correctly and you'll be standing on the side of the stage in no time.

The National Underground

Be in "the know"

The National Underground is the new “cool” bar, that’s still somewhat of a secret co-owned by Gavin and Joey Degraw.
The decor is cool, and the lighting is perfect for making out in secret corners.

The perk: An upstairs and a downstairs that both have bands playing simultaneously, so true in true groupie fashion you could “cover your bases” with more than one band in an evening.

Bands to check: Obviously, the owners are both incredible musicians- but getting in there is not for the novice groupie. However check out,  Clinton Curtis , Joey Auch,  and Will Knox.

What to drink:
The drink you order is really important. It says everything about your groupie status, if you order a glass of wine here you’re completely in the wrong. Order a Natural Light, or whiskey.

Address:  159 E. Houston St. between Allen and Eldridge
New York City

Part of ultimate groupie domination comes by marking your territory. Bleecker Street is lined with music venues and if you show up enough, eventually you’ll be a fixture in the scene, which will make your efforts as a groupie; effortless.

Understand the "Fourth Meal"....

The life of a musician is a crazy one. Late nights, early mornings, and surviving on coffee and cigarettes. Somewhere in between sound check for the venue and hopping on a tour bus to the next city, they often forget to have a solid meal, until after the show.

That’s where you have be prepared for late night dinner dates, and know the best 24 hr. spots to suggest in case your rock star is craving 3am bacon and eggs.

Below are some of the best spots:

French Roast

78 W 11th St, New York, NY 10011

LATE NIGHT FIX

Not your average dinner, French Roast is more a Parisian flair. A lot of foreigners, fancy French pastries and unassuming guests that will leave you and your rocker alone, for ample cuddle time.

Is the bassist craving the taste of home cooking and tired of always eating food “on the road?” Take him here and order: Tomato Soup and Mac & Cheese

Cosmopolitan Hotel

Jo Malone

To maximize your groupie appeal, you MUST have a scent. Lilacs, cookies, citrus, something that will stay in their memories….then when they smell a fresh picked bouquet of Lily’s, while they’re on the other side of the country….you’ll be the first thought in their mind. Who knows, maybe you’ll even inspire a song???

Go where there is history...

The Bitter End is surely no newbie on the block when it comes to the world of bands and groupies. Since it’s conception in 1961 they’ve had some of the best musicians play; Billy Joel, Curtis Mayfield, Miles Davis, Carly Simon, Stevie Wonder and more.

The Perk: The sidewalk outside the front of the club, the bands hang out and chat, after they play, don’t expect to start until late- 1am is a good arrival time.

Bands to check:
The singer/songwriter sessions

What to drink: Domestic bottle beer- bud, miller, etc.

Village Lantern

167 Bleecker St Frnt, New York, NY 10012

Only a short walk from The Bitter End, The Village Lantern usually doesn’t have a cover, so you won’t have to use your groupie charm in order to sweet talk your way in for free. Also no need to worry about getting in the back door, all the bands on Bleecker St. hang out ON Bleecker in between sets, or shots.

No luck with the drummer over at Village Lantern? How about trying Kenny’s Castaways?

French Roast Open 24hr

Sugar Cafe

200 Allen St, New York, NY 10002

Craving something sweet, so accompany your sweet success of making it on the tour bus headed to the next city? Grab a brownie or some French toast, since you’ll probably sleep through breakfast tomorrow.

Groupie Destinations in New York

Know where you can "sleep"....

Have you ever tried sleeping on a bus?? Beside the small spaces, it’s quite difficult to really spread out….or get a good nights sleep.

Know where you can go, that’s relatively cheap (don’t take your band to The Waldorf, that’s all wrong) but still rocker chic.

This shows the dichotomy between men and women in certain arenas, chelsea… no such thing as an attractive stalker… instead she’s labeled a groupie or in the absence of rock music, your eventual girlfriend. Guys that follow women around incessantly is deviant behavior. And to think women be complaining about the glass ceiling!
