What Does "Home Cooking" Mean to You????
Every time I go back home I'm excited about a few things; the pantry, my old bed and my Mother's cooking. Sure, she only has a handful of recipes and we tend to eat out for every meal but when I smell her chili cooking, I find my peace. Everyone grew up with something different, my home cooking wasn't necessarily the same thing YOU looked forward to when you came home for s visit. What foods remind you of home? What do you miss? Are you stingy or are you willing to share a recipe or two?? ;)
Home Cookin' means.....
CASSEROLE!!!!!!!
Sure maybe it isn’t original, BUT, that doesn’t mean that my Nana didn’t make a mean casserole. I look forward to it every time she cooks. Cheesy, melty, goodness. It’s filling, you can get a little creative with it even. Here’s my Nana’s, enjoy!
When in doubt....
BUST THE CASSEROLE OUT!
Cookbooks Galore!
These are honestly less than HALF of my parents cookbooks. Yeah, it’s out of control. But to say they cook a lot would be an understatement. They have his and hers cookbook shelves AND spice racks. Insane. Needless to say, I loveee going home.

Choose Wisely
I like when my parents cook me stuff I can’t afford, like steak!! And expensive fishes. My parents always ask me what I want for dinner when I go home. Never go home and request a pasta dish. Go for the gold. Or the beef.

Chicken Dinner Casserole....you know you love it.
4 chicken breasts (halved)
1 cup uncooked rice
1/2 cup butter
1 can creamed chicken soup (Campbell’s of course!)
1 can celery soup
1 can mushroom soup
1/2 soup can water
Melt butter in a large saucepan and mix in soup and water. Spread raw rice in an un-greased baking dish (13X9). Pour in half of soup mixture. Lay uncooked chicken pieces (breast or others) over this. Top with remaining soup. Bake three hours at 375 degrees. Cover with foil–don’t peek!
When I think about "HOME cooking....."
- I think of having a FULL BELLY
- Waking up to the smell of something cooking instead of having to get up, to cook it.
- I think PLATES AND PLATES of pasta with thick, hearty, marinara sauce.
- I want to bake CHRISTMAS COOKIES! Except rather than drinking hot chocolate, I’d like to bake while drinking wine instead ;)
When I think about home cookin'......
I WISH Paula Dean from The Foodnetwork was my Grandmother. As much as I love Granny, she’s known for bringing me the Cherry Pies from 7-11 as a “treat.” She’s also the one that let me eat Cheeto’s for dinner.
Jewish Home Cooking
When I go home it’s all about the Jewish cooking: brisket, matzah ball soup, kugel, challah— and it’s all homemade! Sometimes I’m a little angry that my mom made all this stuff from scratch when I were growing up, because it makes all store-bought food taste like sandpaper. But I guess that makes going home all the more special.
