Holiday Traditions for Better or Worse

Does your family make you go caroling? Put a lump of coal in your stocking? Go on a Christmas movie binge? Cut down a tree? Go sled-riding during the first snow that lays? All-night dreidel-playing? What are YOUR holiday traditions, the good and bad?

Bring on the good stuff!

Charades

We used to play charades every year, which was always hilarious because all the old folks like great aunts, uncles and grand parents would play as well.  My great aunt Edythe once acted out the word “faint” by dropping to the ground. HARD.  We all thought she had died, but she hopped right back up.  She was very spry for a 89-year-old lady..

Making 10 kinds of cookies!

Baking from scratch was a weekly occurrence in my childhood home, but Christmas time meant ten times the cookies! Literally. I made the one you see above when I was sick one year over the holidays. Despite looking angry, it was one tasty cookie.

Playing Bingo

Bingo goes hand-in-hand with growing up Catholic in Pittsburgh, so naturally it has infiltrated Christmas. My extended family is HUGE (see “Catholic” above), so as more and more kids were born, the buying a gift for everyone “tradition” wasn’t economically sustainable.

So NOW, people buy prizes, like gift cards and candy, and we all play bingo for them. It. is. AWESOME.

Air your grievances!

Too much "doing," not enough "resting"

Okay, I’m fishing for some bad “traditions,” but I can’t come up with any except that the holidays feel exhausting most years and they shouldn’t. I love Christmas parties, families and holiday events, but sometimes there are too many. Whatever happened to just staying home and playing with your new model cars and Barbies while eating cookies for every meal? I want those days back this year.
