Hey Daddy-O, let's go hit the Boston jazz scene

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

Okay, so while Boston definitely rivals New York for pizza, its jazz scene leaves a lot to be desired. But rather than sit at home whining while you listen to your Ella albums, why not do something about it and support the jazz scene that IS out there? From Cambridge to Roxbury, there's jazz enough to go around - you've just got to find it (but I've done that for you).

Regattabar One Bennett

Cambridge, MA 02138

Intimate and centrally-located, Regattabar is the premier destination for Boston-area jazz fans. Although it plays host to scores of major talent, however, the setting leaves a bit to be desired (read: Regattabar is on the third floor of the Charles Hotel and feels more like a conference room than a jazz club). And a last word to the wise: eat first.

Jazz Boston, a Society for Jazzheads

Boston’s premier jazz society offers a musician directory, list of venues, and other local information.

Wally's Cafe

427 Massachusetts Ave, Roxbury, MA 02118

This is Boston’s oldest jazz club, in a nutshell. The music is fantastic, the atmosphere low-key, and the drinks reasonably-priced (it is in Roxbury, after all). Better yet, they only serve Doritos – but allow you to bring in your own grub. Unfortunately, there’s a contingent of more-underground-than-thou thirtysomethings that call this place home, chilling like beatniks and snorting blow in the bathroom, but that doesn’t take away from the local sound of the mostly-student performers.

Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA)

The ICA’s HarborWalk Sounds series features Berklee artists of various genres – in reality, nearly every other show is jazz.

Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival

Berklee also hosts a yearly jazz festival (September 25-27 this year)

Johnny D's

17 Holland Street Somerville, MA 02144

Johnny D’s is a great local live music club, but what really draws a crowd is their Saturday and Sunday live jazz brunch. I don’t know about you, but nothing says loving like a tall stack of pancakes and a repertoire of standards!

Lizard Lounge

1667 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02138

Though the Lizard Lounge only gets jazz groups on occasion, when it does, it’s a great place to sit back and enjoy the music (and if your tastes are diverse, the other shows are worthwhile too). Dark, subterranean and moody, you’ll feel transported to The Village.

Scullers Grille and Lounge

400 Soldiers, Allston, MA 02134

Dark, crowded and overpriced, Scullers is a typical big-city jazz club by all accounts: music from all over the world, dinner-and-stage-show, and all that (other) jazz. Like Regattabar, it is (unfortunately) also cursed with the misfortune of looking and feeling like just another room in a hotel, but don’t let it get in the way – the music is top-notch.

Brian Bromberg All Stars 23

The Savant Project

1625 Tremont Street Boston, MA 02120

Jazz is up for grabs every second and fourth Thursday, but this little gem is worth checking out any night of the week for its fantastic cocktails and tasty meals.

Berklee Performance Center

Move over, Juilliard. Berklee School of Music is Boston’s answer to the revered school (and its sound a worthy rival). The Performance Center hosts plenty of big names (Dave Brubeck is on the upcoming events list) and is one of Boston’s best performance halls.

Avenue One at the Hyatt Regency Boston

One Avenue De Lafayette, Boston, MA 02111

Though not a jazz club, it is located in a hotel (what’s up with Boston and hotel jazz?) Seriously though, Avenue One has nightly live music, much of which is jazz. Take it where you can get it.

Breezeway Bar & Grill

153 Blue Hill Avenue, Roxbury, MA 02119

Breezeway’s Thursday night “Live jazz in the city” series ensures that your Thursday eve will be a great one. And with no cover, you can splurge on their tasty margaritas and burgers (try the ‘Bury burger – for $5.99, this standard is a local favorite)

The Beehive

541 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02116

You were probably more than a little sad when Bob’s Southern Grill closed. Maybe you even cried. Please, dry your tears – while the Beehive certainly caters to a different clientele, it has the same owner, and many of the same groups play here, making it – in terms of jazz, at least – a satisfactory replacement. Younger jazz fans will particularly appreciate The Beehive’s vibe.

Old South Church

Quite possibly Boston’s strangest jazz “venue,” the Old South Church (a gay-friendly, Unitarian house of worship) offers Thursday night jazz worship for its parishioners. How completely random, eh?

Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center

41 Second Street Cambridge, MA 02141

CMAC’s mission is “to present visual and performing arts programs to educate the community about diversity.” Their Friday “Real Deal Jazz Club & Cafe” does just that.

Just follow your ears...

Ryles Jazz Club

212 Hampshire Street, Cambridge, MA 02139

A straight up jazz club that’s NOT located in a hotel…now that’s style. Ryles gets lots of local groups, plus a bevy of national and international performers as well.

Lucky's Lounge

This hidden gem (no, literally, there’s no sign) is reminiscent of a Rat Pack-era supper club. Although they seem to try too hard, it’s worth it to stumble in on a Sunday night and find the Al Vega Trio jamming their hearts out.

Sally O'Brien's

335 Somerville Ave Somerville, MA 02143

This great little hometown bar has poker nights, comedy shows, and…oh yeah, JAZZ. There’s never a cover, so go enjoy – and don’t forget your bartender!
