Guy's Guide to Marriage Proposal

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

So it’s come to this, huh?
You’re giving up Macaroni & Cheese & lying around in your underwear?
How bout parting with closing the bathroom door and *gasp* putting down the toilet seat?
Well, if it’s time to move on past your singlehood and ask that special someone for their hand in marriage, here’s a few ideas to help you find that special place (and avoid the worst ones).

Bad Idea:

Unless you’re both REALLY into Star Wars, emailing her this is probably a bad idea.

Good Idea:

Denver Botanical Gardens is a
beautiful choice for a proposal, and offers some 23 acres for your
special question. Scout it out first and find somewhere really cool, though I
recommend the Romantic
Gardens.

Paradise

Other paradisaical places to pop the question.

Denver Botanic Gardens

Denver, CO 80202

Bad Idea:

Although it’s not the most romantic notion in the world, it may be best to have a good idea of whether or not she’s going to say yes. Oh, and there’s a theme here. Let’s see if you pick up on it.

Good Idea:

Wineries are awesome for popping
the question. Just don’t drink more than you can handle to get your nerves up.
If you both enjoy wines, check out some of the local wines and visit one that
really appeals to you.

You don’t need to go to France to get a good wine or to find
a decent winery. In Denver,
I like Balistreri Wines
– they have a greenhouse as well as their winery, which is a perfect place to
be inspired.

Bad Idea

A TV show. Getting the theme yet?

Good Idea:

Like to hike? There’s some really magnificent views that are
available in the Rocky Mountain region, close by Denver yet far enough from a ton of people to
make it intimate and romantic. This is the way I proposed, and since we’re both the outdoorsey types, she loved it. Plus, she was too tired to run away.

Bad Idea:

Maybe it’s not so great to ask in front of the family when you’re not sure either.

Good Idea (with Bad Example)

Make it private, though doing it at a spot that’s meaningful to you both is a huge plus. Unless it’s a karaoke bar. I’m as big a fan of karaoke as the next guy, but karaoke is cheesy, even if that’s what you both like.

Armida's Restaurant

840 Lincoln St, Denver, CO 80203

If you insist on Karaoke, this place does it 7 days a week.

Bad Idea:

Don’t hide the ring in food. It’s tired and the worst thing
that could happen is she chokes on it and has to go to the emergency room.
After taking out a loan to pay it off, you’ll want to worry more about giving
it to her safely than risking it in a chocolate cake.

Good Idea:

Do it on one knee. Look, it’s the 21st century,
but women still like to feel as if you’re being romantic in some way. Getting
down on one knee shows a degree of seriousness that is meaningful and loving.
Trust me on this, if you don’t do it, you’ll never hear the end of it.

Bad Idea

Don’t give her this. I don’t care how much of a geek girl she is. This will not be cute unless it’s wrapped inside the ring. And even then, how did you find a woman? Seriously, an 18 charisma does not transfer over into real life. God, I can’t believe I just said that.

A great guide on what to do AFTER you pop the question.
