The economy is near depression! Wait, the recession is looks to be lightening! Oh no, it's still in the crapper! Hmph. Looks like no one can really decide. Well, no matter how long it takes us to get back walking on our consumerism-bloated feet again, we still want to take measures to slow global warming, protect and conserve resources, and hopefully save the world. Right? RIGHT?? There are some very easy things to do for the Earth that are in your, YES YOUR, budget! OK, you're right, I don't have a flippin clue what your budget is (let alone my own). But anyway, these green actions SAVE YOU MONEY! And are EASY! So no excuses.

Get Yourself A Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Widget_d3hf0twatbhj3l1p2zrsdh

Sigg and Earthlust are two very fashionable options. Kleen Canteen is also out there are well. These are stainless steel bottles that are easily cleaned, stored, travelled with and re-filled. They are also really durable for all of you rough-housers out there.

A stainless steel water bottle saves you money by enabling you to take any beverage you want on the go.

Why the f**k would you go around town paying $1 for a 10 ounce plastic bottle of water (which, by the way, is probably bottled down in LA no matter what exotic locale is pictured on the label) when you can have your own bottle.

Duh.

Why all the plastic bashing?

Uh, I dunno. The Great Pacific Garbage Dump? It’s where all the plastic goes.

Not to harp on the water thing, but water is essential and there is so much that we can do to cut down on waste in the way we consume water.

Dude, I know people who go spend $60 on flats of water at Costco. Are you one of these people? Stop it! Get yourself a $40 Brita and filter your own water to put in your own water bottle.

Water filtration systems are awesome and make your water taste yummy. Many tests out there have concluded that your tap water “is safer and cleaner than bottled water”: , and filtration systems make double sure of that. They also cut down on packaging and transportation waste incurred in bottling water. And in the end, they are CHEAPER FOR YOU than buying water. Huzzah!

Are you paying more when you are just getting the same water that comes out of your tap??

“More than 25 percent of [bottled water] comes from a municipal supply. The water is treated, purified and sold to us, often at a thousandfold increase in price. Most people are surprised to learn that they’re drinking glorified tap water, but bottlers aren’t required to list the source on the label.” – Janet Majeski Jemmott 2006 Reader’s Digest article.

Crossroads Trading Company

The people who run this place have honed their skills, only accepting back fashionable pieces in great condition.

You can go trade in your old clothes and get either 50% of the total towards clothing there or 30% in cash, immediately.

Just make sure you bring in clothes in season! They don’t accept winter clothes in the summer or vice versa (imagine the space needed to store inventory), so don’t be upset if they don’t take all your stuff – they’ve got a business to run. Nothing personal.

Use Plastic-Free Bag Alternatives

Natural Wax Paper Sandwich Bags

Cheaper than plastic sandwich bags and biodegradable.

If you’re in the habit of making your lunch or toting around snacks, this is the way to do it.

Use Reusable Cloth Shopping Bags

’Cause they are easier to carry out and some grocery stores will give you a little off your total for bringing them in and saving them the bag cost.

Mmmmmm. Plastic.

Buy Recycled Jewelry Instead of Cheesy Brand-new stuff

Look for designers that are bringing old materials to their designs.

These pieces are usually less expensive as the designer is not paying a bunch for raw materials – and they have character! Plus, they are preventing metals and other materials from just getting tossed into landfill.

Get a Stainless Steel Coffee Mug

Widget_bkr1yryxtasr2sj6reoflu

If you are a daily coffee or tea drinker, think of all the paper cups you personally use.

Now consider that these cups are bleached to make them white (before you put your brown beverage in it – I didn’t say it made sense). The waste from the bleach ends up in our oceans and drinking water.

The cups themselves end up added to landfill after you toss them.

Why do we do this? Cups suck!! Mugs are way better and keep your beverage HOT! They are more durable and less likely to spill in your car, on BART, etc (believe me, I have tested them).

Go get a swanky mug and feel pretty self-satisfied every time you hand it to the barista.

Many coffee retailers will give you anywhere from $0.10 to $0.50 off your drink when you bring in your own mug because it saves them the cup cost. This saves you $$ over time – especially if you are a daily drinker.

Relevent Tangent:

I have come to believe that celebrities all become stupid.

All these celebrities that run around are like “save the Earth!” They plan parties to fundraise, they refuse to wear fur, they champion the environment.

Then, every time you see them, it’s like:

Widget_cf8bd-6gfce5wnbl7mzf62

Every time I see these little wretches, they look homeless and are carrying paper coffee cups. Actually, I take it back. With their aesthetic, maybe they are re-using the same ones??

Madonna’s paper cup, complete with corduroy cardboard cup sleeve. Lame.

Environment FAIL. Plastic water bottle + gigantic plastic coffee cup. Way to go, Big Guy.

Widget_dzf-5uepxch6eduy-kht5q

Are we surprised Brit doesn’t consider the environment on a daily basis? No, not really. But it still sucks, ’cause you know she drinks like 6 of those a day.

Widget_dav9j_npzl5i64ajru5-xw

Possibly the biggest contributor to landfill in her weight class and beyond – this cup consumer can battle the big boys!! Go Nicole!

Widget_bx_xdymvlac5_roqzzfmzf

Seriously, there are a million of these.

Get with it, people!! Or at least pay your personal assistant to get with it.
