Historic Newburyport, Massachusetts is a great place to spend the day, but at some point you'll want to eat. And maybe have a drink. Here's a look at some of the best spots in town to do just that.

The best all-around spot:

The Rockfish

38 STATE ST NEWBURYPORT, MA 01950

978-465-6601

Widget_baq61-6wtku4mx5mvx9rvc

{The Rockfish bar, in all it’s glory}

Arguably the best all-around spot in town, serving great, all-American pub food in the heart of town, with large windows perfect for people-watching.  Their specials are always excellent, and menu standbys include the best nachos and clam chowder in town, fantastic chili, and the always-popular mini burgers.  Reasonable prices, tasty food, and proximity to shopping and the main parking lot, you can’t go wrong here.

The best stiff drink:

Thirsty Whale Restaurant

24 Market Sq, Newburyport, MA 01950

For those familiar with Maddie’s in Marblehead, this place offers a similar vibe: a local dive bar with a generous pour. Don’t bother with the food; and if all you want is a beer, go elsewhere. But you’ll get your money’s worth when you order a mixed drink. Just beware: the crowd gets very young as the night goes on, so if you want to avoid the annoyance that is novice drinkers, plan accordingly.

Best selection of beers on tap:

Black Cow

The Black Cow at dusk.

This super-popular restaurant right on the river boasts a fantastic selection of beers on tap and an excellent, moderately-priced menu. The appetizers are burgers are top-notch, the fish and chips are delicious. The warm weather brings in all (yes, all) of the tourists, so if you don’t mind the wait, it will be well worth it.

Waterfront dining (and drinking):

Michael's Harborside II

Tournament Whf, Newburyport, MA 01950

The upper patio at Michael’s.

Michael’s recently underwent a major renovation, which only adds to the appeal of this well-loved haunt. Situated right on the Merrimack River, Michael’s boasts a view and a half, along with a fabulous outdoor deck. The menu is standard American fare; but don’t forget – what you’re here for is the view.

Food, drink, and music:

Grog Restaurant

13 Middle St, Newburyport, MA 01950

The good ol’ Grog.

The Grog offers up two floors of dining, with a full bar on each.  But the big draw is a basement bar where bands galore play – often.  Get yourself a hearty burger on an English muffin or a self-proclaimed “Best Reuben in Town”, and then head downstairs to work it off by bopping your head to rock out.  Or blues out, depending on the night.

The best splurge:

Ten Center Street Restaurant

10 Center St, Newburyport, MA 01950

Upstairs dining at Ten Center.

There isn’t much negative to say about Ten Center Street, unless you aren’t prepared for the cost of the bill at the end of the night.  This is a top-notch spot with a casual vibe. The downstairs tavern is historic, dark, and cozy, and the upstairs has an open dining area with a full bar. The menu is pricey and worth it, and will not disappoint.

For something different:

Agave Mexican Bistro

50 State St, Newburyport, MA 01950

A fantabulous margarita at Agave.

Another gem on State Street: fantastic authentic Mexican food, and the – yes, The – best margaritas you may ever have.  (Try the Mexican 43.  You won’t regret it.)  Three floors of dining fill up fast, so you may have to wait – but you’ll be glad you did.  And when the front windows open up in the warm weather, you’ll have the ultimate streetside eating experience.

The best bagels:

Abraham's Bagels

11 LIBERTY ST NEWBURYPORT, MA 01950

(978) 465-8148

Widget_buuah4cvrakj3iuizxv1el

Abraham’s. Don’t be fooled – behind that door is a crowd of bagel buyers.

There’s no contest here – Abraham’s offers up the best, warmest selection of bagels in town.  Try the Bagali, a treat of bagel dough shaped up like a mini-pizza, topped with tasty toppings.  Come back for lunch and enjoy a slice of delicious pizza or one of their fantastic sandwiches.  One of our favorite spots.

The stop for something sweet:

Pralines Bake Shop

3 LIBERTY ST NEWBURYPORT, MA 01950

(978) 499-8278‎

Words can’t express the fabulousness of Pralines’ Belgian hot chocolate.  On a cold day, treat yourself to a cup and you’ll be revved up for another few hours of shopping.  Or, indulge in one of their other sweet goods for a truly perfect end to any meal.  (Or, as a meal.  Sometimes it happens like that.)

The hidden jewel:

Bottega Toscana

25 State St, Newburyport, MA 01950

This sliver of a spot is classic Newburyport with its brick walls and tall windows. Go in for a lunchtime panini, or a quiet dinner of wine and simple pasta dishes.
