Across the country, in Colorado, where the beer flows from those beautiful mountains, a little political get-together is happening. I think it's called the Democratic National Convention? It may be a big deal, but in true politically competitive fashion (you see that shirt???), all eyes back on New York, please. Stay put and get political in your own backyard.
Do you only sleep with Democrats? Tell the world! Yes, it’s TMI, but who cares!
*Warning*
This will be leftist, liberally-leaning and all the rest of those anti-conservative words because it’s DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION time, people! Must get you in the mood! And because it’s New York and I’m a registered Democrat (who voted for Nader in 2000!). So, take your Republican elephant shirts and scoot.
The cameras may be rolling over there in Denver, but there’s plenty to keep you busy in The Big Apple.
First Amendment Rally
Because it all really starts with the First Amendment, doesn’t it? This is probably the “nicest” looking rally/protest I’ve seen in Union Square, though I’m sure the dirty angry hippies are nearby and just excluded from this particular shot.
Protests and Rallies
There’s always something to complain about…er…I mean, there’s always a worthy cause out there, some political issue that needs some rallying behind, and there are a few New York places of note that tend to “schedule” such events. I’ve got to admit that I never really enjoy protests, and maybe that’s the point? There’s something to be angry about! But, these tend to turn me off from whatever issue is at hand because the attendees seem so nutso and negative. But, to each his own.
Mac Dougal St & Washington Square S, Manhattan, NY 10003
Nearby crepe stand, skateboarders, drugs, big arch, chess players—you name it, Washington Square Park has got it! Oh yeah, and the occasional rally. The village was at the heart of many a political cause in its day, and though it has lost some of its lackluster (I’m looking at you NYUers), you can still kick it democratically.

Union Square
33 East 17th Street New York, NY 10003
Maybe I’m just annoyed because I have to traipse through all the protesters to get to my beloved farmer’s market, but Union Square wins for most obnoxious protest central. But perhaps that means they’re really accomplishing something here? Good times.
Historically, it has been difficult to get permission to hold protests in precious Central Park. Bloomberg was effectively booed by tons of peeps when he refused to approve an anti-war protest in 2004. Is it because Central Park can be tourist-central? Is it too pristine to dirty up with politics? Someone should do the ironic thing and protest the forbidding of protests.

Events Concurrent with the DNC
Okay okay, you wish you were a political blogger covering the DNC! Oh wait, you are a political blogger…and that’s why you are staying at home typing up a storm. But you should still get out! Not all the way to Denver, but how about to some kickin’ events that will give you fodder for those page view-worthy posts.
Sponsored by Act Now, THURSDAY (8/28 7pm) will see the Denver watch party—feel like you’re really there! It’s a shame it’s not on Ladies Night Tuesdays…

The Tank
87 Lafayette Street New York, NY 10013
OMG tonight tonight at the Tank! 8/26, 6pm. The words “open mike” always scare me because, in my mind, they translate to “this is going to suck. hard,” but Tuesday will be different: “Wishes for the Next Administration.” Okay, so it’s a complaint fest? Whatever, there’s FREE beer!
“Where are we now?” is the subject of the open discussion to be held September 3 at 6:30pm. Wow, where ARE we indeed! Going to church for a politically-charged talk and it’s BYOB? Only in New York, my friends.

Again with the interesting place/people combos: the NYC Atheists will be manning a table outside Time Warner Center (which is essentially, you know, a mall) to throw in their non-believing two cents. God forbid! Or forbid God, rather. This might be worth checking out just for the “Voter’s Guide” they’ll be handing out. Don’t all the candidates ALWAYS believe in God? What to do if you’re an Atheist? Conundrum!

"Cute Ass!"
It sounds like the making of an SNL skit: people call Andrew Jackson a “jackass” and hence, a political party mascot is born. I demand a redesign!
If you’re a bit politically passive like I am, you may want to head to your local politically-ACTIVE bookstore. Make ‘em do the work for you! And find some books to get those Democratic juices flowing. Is it time to finally crack Obama’s book? Or Scott McClellan’s What Happened that will remind us of the last 8 years (UNFORTUNATELY)?
I gotta represent my alma mater, Smith College, by including Manhattan’s own left-leaning, feminist bookstore. Forget the other bookstores that start with “B’s”! If you felt apathetic about the election and candidates upon entering, you won’t by the time you leave.

It sounds all political and just the place to hit up in these times! However, this miniscule bookstore stocks more musical reads and a random assortment that you will have to dig through to find something political. But that name! It sounds so hardcore!

Back when I lived in the East Village, I LOVED the irony of going to the Theater for the New City to VOTE because also housed in the building was the anarchist bookstore! May Day Books got kicked out, controversially, but they still “exist” virtually, and will hopefully someday take up residence somewhere. (Maybe in City Hall or in Family Courts?)
A “coffee-house and bookstore hosting music and political events promoting social justice, and publishing the people’s voice.” Books! Coffee! Democracy! Yes, of course they serve fair-trade java and it feels like election season no matter what time of year it is. You may even meet your future hippy hubby here!

Vote Vote Vote!
*Extremely Important Dates*
November 4 is Election Day!!!
Attending political rallies and reading books about democracy (I have typed “democrazy” every time thus far) is all well and good, but if you’re over 18, make use of the wonderful freedom we have: the right to vote! It’s easy to do and supports that whole idea of a democracy. Below is an important link to some important dates!
I know some people who actually didn’t know that you had to register BEFORE voting. Um, yeah. And there are different deadlines for this depending on where you live. Click above to see Rock The Vote’s list so you don’t miss your deadline!
Unless you live in Wyoming or Idaho, where you can register at the polls! Probably because there are like, 3 people total living in each state?
Politically-Driven
Oh, you're in Denver, you say? Well, aren't you special DNCers!
