Get In Touch With Your Inner Bohemian In New York

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

In a city that is full of culture and dripping with art, food and history, you'd think some of us chic metropolitan inhabitants would slow down for five minutes to partake in some of what makes the city so fantastic. Wrong. That is why there are so many hot dog stands my friends. If you ask me, the hippies knew best- though living on the income of a hippie in NYC would be similar to living like the homeless...we walk a fine line.

So take some time and engage in the "modernized" bohemia before you get back to the grind. NOTE: paisley is required for all activities involved.Peace.

Meditation in New York

That’s right. Meditation. It’s time to clean out those files and quiet the brain before running to the next meeting. Zen is key, just make sure you visit BEFORE you go to Cafe Wha? Becoming zen doesn’t involve a hangover. If you have ever tried meditating with a hangover it’s quite deceiving, that whole “spinning” sensation isn’t a “higher power” is actually nausea. I’ve excused myself from finding my Third Eye in order to find a toilet.
Guided talks and meditations are offered all day at various locations, so you get more than one chance to chill out.

Strawberry Fields Forever

There is nothing like paying homage to the great John Lennon. Pick some flowers from a fancy stoop on the Upper West Side and line the peace sign with them at West 72nd st. Banjos, guitars, choirs and full our renditions of “Imagine” are also welcome. May I suggest to reach full bohemian capacity that you raise both arms into the air, and “Paint the sky” palms open, eyes closed, flowing back and forth- it really trips people out and maximizes your bohemian ability.

Hudson Bar and Books

636 Hudson St, New York, NY 10014

Have you ever smelled a bohemian? Yep that’s right patchouli is in there…But you’re missing one very distinct smell. Smoke? I didn’t say they were healthy. The dimly lit cigar bar with long hours over a glass of port and a puff or two adds to the bohemian flair. Especially if you visit early evening and emerge with the aroma of pipe smoking, Cuban cigar rolling dandy. It pairs well with ratty hair for all you ladies.

East West Books

78 5TH AVE NEW YORK, NY 10003

My first encounter with East West Books was when I was walking down fifth avenue and a lady dressed as an angel, FULL COSTUME, wings, white eyelashes, proceeded to give me a stack full of coupons for a free vanilla chai- She was an angel INDEED. Not only was my chai PERFECTION, but I ended up buying affirmation cards, since reciting on repeat, ” I am beautiful and powerful, all is well.” can be calming amongst the NYC craziness. Afer I was affirmed and feeling lovely, I discovered not only is a bookstore with a plethora of wisdom, but it is ALSO a yoga studio. I sashayed out of the building grinning like a true hippie- I chanted, I drank tea, affirmed and “OM-ed” my way through the city.

Antique Garage Restaurant

41 MERCER ST NEW YORK, NY 10013

The vibe is charming and the Mediterranean food is killer, sit outside on a nice day and watch Soho visitors in fancy clothes. No antiques were harmed while cooking.

Zachary's Smile

9 GREENWICH AVE NEW YORK, NY 10011

Vintage shopping is key to living like a bohemian for the day. You gotta play the role to live it. This means old clothes, that are fabulous and falling apart and now cost entirely too much money…but hey, you’re wearing a piece of history.

Aligning your chakras isn’t all that easy on the subway, so finding a safe haven where people have on perma-grins and encourage “freedom of expression” while holding their legs behind their heads is an easy way to lighten up. I was determined to be able to do the “toe hook” where you wrap one finger around your toe and lift your leg…turns out “toe hook” without proper stretching turns into, PAIN in the ass- literally the next day. Luckily, I had harnessed my CHI, so I “worked through the discomfort.” Namaste.

See? She’s SERIOUSLY happy….it’s all the stretching.

Cafe Wha?

115 MACDOUGAL ST NEW YORK, NY 10012

Bob Dylan made his very first appearance here and it didn’t stop there, other performers from the past include; Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Pryor and the bill continues. And, if you go for the evening and the band sucks- the food and the drinks don’t, so it’ll even out. Sing along and stumble out in true bohemian fashion.

Rummaging for “shiny” things amongst a pile of broken beads, rusty tins and chipped china glasses is an ultimate bohemian move. I have (more than once) arrived looking like I hopped out of an Abercrombie catalog and emerged at the end of a good barter session looking like Mary-Kate Olsen (yes, she’s the one who looks slightly homeless.)
Incense wafts through the air, and remnants of TRUE bohemian history are at your fingertips to take home with you- if you have a home.

So yeah, you’ve meditated and cleared out the toxins and it’s time to put them all back into your body. Part of bohemianism is, alcoholism? No, lets stay away from that but the bohemians love their drink. Or a few drinks. When I visited Aroma I spent a good five hours drinking red wine, followed by some Prosecco- since I love having a massive headache. The five course chef “tasting menu” makes is really easy to get cozy and stick around while you digest. I had the perfect bohemian buzz AND enjoyed a long, drawn out meal (dessert included) instead of rushing through my small salad so I could get home to watch American Idol. Sit. Ditch watching the clock and order round number two.
