The German Music Scene in the 70s
It was really funny back then. Very harmless, very Barry Manilowish. Hitparade was a family event in Germany every Saturday night, and this is where I learned the word “play-back”. Nothing was live, but it was very entertaining. Disco was another show that was a bit more edgy, the name even changed every year from Disco 71 to Disco 72 and so on… It’s amazing that we waited feverishly for these shows every week. So here are the songs that stuck in my mind the most.
Ti amo
A love song that was translated from some other language. This was a huge hit.
Howard is British, but he sings in German. He found his niche.
Es faehrt ein Zug nach Nirgendwo (there is a train going to nowhere). This must be getting closer to the 80s – it’s a little darker…
Du kannst nicht immer 17 sein (you cannot stay 17 forever)
He was breaking every woman’s heart!
Traenen luegen nicht (tears don’t lie). Sure makes me want to cry – yikes
Schoen ist es auf der Welt zu sein (it’s wonderful to be in this world)
This was my absolute favorite song growing up!
Blau blueht der Enzian (something about a blue mountain flower)
Heino is a phenomenon – that’s all there is to it.
