Shop, Eat & Play Like A Geek In Philly
The city of brotherly love is known for its stellar geek scene. But, don't take my word for it. Just take a look at Geekadelphia (geekadelphia.com), Philadelphia's Premiere Geek Blog founded by Eric Smith (yes, that's him in the picture) and Tim Quirino. Consider them Philly's geek connoisseurs. So when I asked Eric where to go if you wanted to shop, eat and play like a Philly geek, this is what he had to say...
OMOI
Eric Says: “This boutique is a hidden gem in the Rittenhouse Square area of Center City, hiding out amongst the historic rowhomes. The owner researches every item in the store, selecting everything individually according to the latest trends in Japanese inspired toys and clothing. Her friendly staff also go out of their way to make sure you go home with the right gift or collectible. Plus, it’s infinitely better to shop with folks who know about these toys, rather than at Urban Outfitters.”
BRAVE NEW WORLDS
Eric Says: “My only stop in Philadelphia for comics and, surprisingly enough, art. These guys host a First Friday event that features comic inspired art every month, sometimes varying the subject to video games and movies. Sitting in Old City amongst a wealth of boutiques, it’s a great place to take the girlfriend. She can look at clothes at the neighboring shops, while you look at comics. And I’d suggest this tactic, cause everyone falls in love with Brian.”
And if you’re ever experiencing BNW withdrawal, you can make the pain go away by reading their blog, where staff “weighs in on all going on’s in the Marvel, DC, Dark Horse ’verses (and then some).”
JINXED
Eric Says: “Another great toy store, Jinxed does clothes a little differently… they make their own. You’re guaranteed to pick up something fresh and unique here, because you won’t be able to find it anywhere else. While you’re in the area, get a tattoo across the street.”
Not familiar with the Dunny Scene? And you call yourself a Geek. Still no clue? Fine, read about it here).
Jinxed will soon be packing boxes and moving over to to The Piazza in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia around 2nd and Girard Ave. So check their site before you make the trek.

NATIONAL MECHANICS BAR & RESTAURANT
Eric Says: “What could be better than eating at a restaurant launched by a bunch of geeks? Owned by a web development company that resides upstairs, NM is hands down my favorite place to dine out. Great specials, geeky glasses (guess who the people are on your pint glass, see if you can get ’em all), and an awesome atmosphere.”
I have a special place in my heart for National! Tuesday karaoke, Sunday night video games on a drop down movie screen, free wi-fi, local brews and seriously delicious meals (don’t miss out on their bloody mary with bacon infused vodka or National burger). Enough to make a geek’s heart skip a beat or two!
Keep up with the geek scene and follow Nationals on twitter.

TATTOOED MOM RESTAURANT
Eric Says: “These guys have one of the best weekend specials ever. Half off sandwiches? A chicken parm sandwich for $3?! Unreal. Plus the place is decorated in fun toys, rings, candy, tops, etc on every table. The owner is a geek as well, using social media to connect with his audience. Go follow him, you might win some food!”
