Where To Find Free Wi-Fi In Chicago

616080338

As a freelancer, it can get very boring sitting in my apartment day after day writing. I'm missing out on so much: the weather, socializing and fantastic coffee. If you're aching to get out, whether it be for a cup o' joe, some people watching, studying or actual work, here's a list of some free wi-fi spots in the Chicagoland area.

McDonald's

Widget_az6vvstfnfs7qnpe4gdl7t

McDonald’s might not be the healthiest choice, but they’re now offering free Wi-Fi at more than 15,000 locations. The nice thing about this is that there is a McD’s in just about every location.

Intelligentsia Coffee

Widget_ddyfhnixfcoylfat8hkwip

I really enjoy my visits to Intelligentsia. I’m not a huge coffee drinker (I only like it if it doesn’t taste like coffee, ha!) but I really enjoy theirs. At peak hours, Ingelligentsia might not be the best place for studying; it can get quite noisy. If you can manage to avoid the lunch and after work rush, you should be okay.

Intelligentsia Coffee

53 W Jackson Blvd, Chicago, IL 60604

Intelligentisa is great for people watching since it has such a mixed crowd of people walking through its doors. Students, business folks and casual coffee lovers can’t stay away. The only downside to working from here is that there are limited outlets. The one on Jackson only seems to have one. It might not hurt to carry around one of those electric strips. I guarantee someone who’s losing juice will call you a God if you whip one out.

Kouks Vintage Cafe

5653 N Northwest Hwy, Chicago, IL 60646

Kouks Vintage Cafe is party coffee shop, part antique/collectible shop. They sell gently used items for pretty reasonable prices. If you need a break from working, you’ll never know what you might find at Kouks.
Open Tues-Fri 10-6:30 p.m./Sat-Sun 10-5 p.m.

Argo Tea

You can find Argo Tea randomly sprinkled around Chicago. My classmates would swear by their tea on a daily basis. Besides having free Wi-Fi, they have plenty of outlets. Don’t worry about dead batteries!

Argo Tea

1 N. Dearborn, Chicago, IL

This Argo Tea is off of the Washington Red/Blue Line. They have an upstairs that is a bit quieter than downstairs. Better for those who can’t focus in noisy environments. There’s also a bathroom! One downside is that you get kicked off of their Wi-Fi after two hours.

I Coffee

Widget_a-tip5n7ff1y6pspwsuxiv

I Coffee boats a friendly and warm environment and very tasty food. Sadly I was informed that I Coffee is currently closed. Don’t fret! I’ve heard rumors that it will open again soon. I love I Coffee because it’s close to where I live. Once you leave downtown and the hip Chicago neighborhoods, the Starbucks, Argo Teas and other cute shops become few and far between.

I Coffee Inc

4945 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60630

Located off of the Jefferson Park Blue Line stop. Open from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on week days.

Caffe RoM

Widget_a60wjeen1ltydcdttpf-bq

Caffe RoM has amazing coffee and pastries. It’s one of Chicago’s only modern Italian coffee bars. The staff is bubbly, the music and decor are energizing, it has everything you need for those long work days. It doesn’t strike me as the most quiet place though. If you need silence, try one of the other coffee shops. If you need amazing gelato to get your work done, this is the place for you.

Noble Tree Coffee & Tea

Widget_apoclstwdaor1ud37n3gb_

Great Coffee | Serious Pie | Free Wi-Fi
Noble Tree Coffee & Tea is my favorite location in this guide. There’s plenty of space for students, book and coffee lovers and freelancers. Noble Tree has three floors with plenty of tables, comfortable chairs, outlets and reading lamps. There’s all sorts of fun and inspirational decor.

Noble Tree

2444 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60614

This charming Lincoln Park coffee shop has character and free Wi-Fi. What more could you need?! I suppose great coffee and tea would help. They’re open to 11 p.m., which is great for those of you who can’t make it out until after work or school. They also have an outdoor patio for those of you who enjoy warm summer nights and a good book.

Starbucks

You can use your Starbucks card to get two hours of free Wi-Fi at any one of their locations. Just purchase a gift card for any amount you’d like, register it online and when you use it in store, reap the benefits of free Wi-Fi for the price of a coffee. Get more information about it here.

Pause

Widget_a_q7huka1h7zqqzuuessew

Pause was recommended to me as a cozy coffee shop with a unique style. What I love about Pause, aside from the free Wi-Fi, is the fact that they have iMacs available to rent for $1 (per 10 minutes). The staff is extremely pleasant and easy to talk to. There’s even a small seating area outside so you can work and still enjoy the beautiful weather.

Pause

Pause

1107 W Berwyn Ave, Chicago, IL 60640

Pause is located off of the Berwyn Red line stop for you “L” riders.

The only downer is their hours. Pause is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. during the week. You late-night studiers/workers will have to find another place to go.

Star Lounge

Star Lounge is a freelancer’s dream. By that I mean they offer plenty of table space and a lot of outlets! I hate being expected to fight over an outlet. People can be vicious and I’m quite fragile. Star Lounge also has outdoor seating for those gorgeous Chicago days. (Photo by Alec Oliver)

Star Lounge Coffee Company

2521 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622

Star Lounge has some really nifty artwork, in case you’re looking for some inspiration. They also roast their own coffee. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve heard some great things about it.
Heard it has really awesome artwork

Caribou Coffee

Widget_ds4q4zcvbe-5ary63t3noo

If you pay close attention while walking in downtown Chicago, you’ll see Caribou Coffee among the hundreds of Starbucks. I prefer Caribou because it’s usually less crowded than Starbucks. The staff is very friendly and you get free coffee refills. My favorite drinks are the Turtle Mocha and Caramel High Rise. I also discovered that they sell delicious Caribou Coffee granola bars, both at the shop and Jewel.

Caribou Coffee Store # 778

600 N Kingsbury St, Chicago, IL 60654

This location is off of the Grand Blue Line and
Chicago Purple/Brown Line stops. It has a beautiful view of a park. So if you’re needing a break from a cubicle or home desk, get out and enjoy some of Chicago’s fantastic scenery.

The Coffee Studio

The Coffee Studio has some pretty fun art lining its walls. The staff is quirky and pleasant and the atmosphere is calm. The Wi-Fi, while free, is usually limited to an hour. I heard from a friend that if it runs out, most of the time the staff won’t mind printing out another code for you, with or without another drink order.

5628 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60660

The Coffee Studio is open til 9 p.m. on week nights. Another early closing place. It’s also a pretty small space, so be prepared to wait for comfy working space.

Au Bon Pain Co Inc

181 W Madison St Ste 500, Chicago, IL 60602

Most have spacious seating indoors as well as outdoors. I’ve only found a couple of them with free Wi-Fi though. If you know of some, definitely let me know!

Borders

Widget_cuvx6-z2peca2yxits1g1i

I’ve spent many hours inside of Borders. Okay, so some of those hours were spent looking at books and not working, but can you blame me? I know that Borders doesn’t have free Wi-Fi, unless you’re a T-Mobile user, but I included them for the space. Most Borders have ample study/work space. Chairs are randomly mixed in throughout the floor and the cafe has many tables, chairs and a few couches.

This particular location has three floors of books, tables, chairs, CDs, DVDs and coffee.
