A Guide For The Lonely In New York City

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

New York is a city that moves fast. The streets are packed, people are running a million miles a minute and often your loneliness doesn't set in until you sit down for a nice meal and you realize you've got no one to call to join you. You'd think being piled on top of each other and seeing streets full of moving bodies would remind you that you aren't REALLY alone, unfortunately it doesn't always work that way. I had to find my own cure, sometimes it meant music, other times it meant food, seeking a out a nice piece of art or learning how to enjoy the company of my own thoughts over a good glass of wine. Whatever cure for loneliness works best for you, these worked for me. May your lonely little heart feel a bit better ;)

Chat up the bartender.....

I understand why bartenders have to be friendly, because if you step into a bar and grab a drink alone when it isn’t Happy Hour, you’ve either; had a bad day or need a friend.

Both of which have happened to me.

The art of bar chatting is easy, conversation flows and you tend to divulge a little bit too much info and visa versa, so it’s easy to feel closeness right away.

The bartender at Gottino- was extra nice, we talked about work and hometowns. He has no plans to move back to California and neither do I.
The bartenders at VYNL are quite friendly and the decor is snappy, music is good and the bathrooms are cute. Plus, it’s always pretty busy at VYNL, and the type of people who go there aren’t creepos like some loners in dive bars.
The bartenders at Bar Blanc are really helpful with the wine selection, the place is a bit fancy so I like to heal my loneliness by, “taking myself on a date.”
A bartender at Fiddlesticks has an Irish accent, which makes me think he’s far from home….so there’s a chance he’s slightly less lonely than I??

Take A Stroll.....

Central Park is usually the first spot one thinks of when they think, “park in NYC” but in a park that is so huge, loneliness is only enhanced. Especially when you get lost, which happens frequently…. the only time I didn’t get disoriented was when I was taking a ride in the Peticab.

So instead, I head over to Tompkins Square Park, on east 7th and Avenue A.
Kids are running around, you can see all the way to the other end or watch the dogs run around in the park and daydream about wishing you were a dog, they seem to have it so much easier don’t they?

Grab some popcorn, extra large and eat it without other sticky hands reaching in at the Angelika Film Center.

Cafe Angelique

68 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10012

The first day I moved to New York I realized I would be spending MANY meals eating alone until I established my circle of friends. The first stop: Cafe Angelique. Luckily, I wasn’t the only one eating alone. People had their books or the company of a latte and a croissant, I had the company of a huge slice of quiche and was more than satisfied. A seat at the window made for good people watching and made me feel much less lonely, for about thirty minutes….which is better than nothing.

Music is the best cure for a lonely heart. Because artists are notoriously lonely people and their healing mechanism is to “create” and pour themselves a glass of whiskey to drink while they write a sad song and for those of us that are the listeners, we feel slightly better about ourselves knowing that we aren’t the ONLY ones who feel “alone out there.” Last album I bought: Float by Flogging Molly

Instead of going to a huge AMC or United Artist theater where everyone is out on a “movie date” its nice to go to a smaller theater where you can sit and eat a BUCKET of popcorn by yourself, guiltlessly. To me, there is NOTHING lonely in buying movie junk food and devouring it….I’m reminded how much I don’t like sharing and that seeing movies alone are better than having someone chat in your ear about, “what’s going to happen next?!”

Visit the main attractions....

Sometimes I think I’m lonely until I go out and am bombarded with bodies flying at high speed, coming from left to right, up, down and all around. If you’re feeling lonely, go to the main attraction and after about an hour the LAST thing you’ll want to do is have a party of people around you. Solitude will feel peaceful instead of depressing.

Times Square- Holy, tourists. You actually may end up hating people all together if you visit Times Square. From W. 42nd to W. 47th st.

Union Square-
There is all sorts of insanity here, you can also buy some random trinkets and what not on the street, and retail therapy is an incredible aid to loneliness. Located at 14th st.

Speaking of retail therapy…..go to Chinatown!

Now tell me how lonely you feel?
