Albums You've Played Into Dust
You know you've got an album that you've played so many times that you can talk along with the spoken interludes, and correctly guess the exact amount of time between tracks. Whether it is some old tape that happened to be the only thing you could find on a 29-hour-road trip, or just your old favorite, what are the records you've just played out?
Chet Baker - Sings
So smooth. So good.
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
“Sweet Road” is my theme song.
Chromeo - Fancy Footwork
A guilty pleasure. I couldn’t resist ever since I heard Tenderoni while driving my 1994 purple Saturn and ended up crashing into a Mercedes in a parking lot. Awesome!
See if you can beat my 1994 purple Saturn that wouldn’t go into reverse…
The Darjeeling Ltd. Soundtrack
Because I just love blasting “Typewriter” at 7am after a heavy night of drinking.
If you want to know this alleged musicial hangover cure.
The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner
If you asked me, I would have no answer for why I have listened to this album relentlessly for about the past 10 years.
I just love it.
That is all.
Badly Drawn Boy-The Hour of Bewilderbeast
Funny, I have NEVER seen this album cover till now b/c my cousin burned me the copy I have had since college…and listened to obsessively. It was all about “Stone on the water.”
Death Cab for Cutie-- Transatlanticism
I played this thing to death when I was in college. Oh how how those emo lyrics spoke to me…
Jets to Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary
This was probably my number one album for all four years of college. I drove eight hours to Seattle listening to this just to see these guys play. While I still miss Jawbreaker, Jets was a welcome substitute.
Ryan Adams- Cold Roses
Really all my Ryan Adams albums should be dust by now, but especially Cold Roses, which is absolutely tremazing and I probably couldn’t live without. OK, maybe I’m being a tiny bit dramatic, but nope, I couldn’t live.

The Big Chill Soundtrack
All that Motown magic to underscore the angst of eight Caucasians.
Frank Turner - Love Ire and Song
Brilliant album. Great lyrics and catchy tunes.
Elliott Smith - XO
This one was great for my teenage angst, yaknow?
The Magnetic Fields- 69 Love Songs
The most mix-tape-able album of all time.
Check out MattFried’s mixtape guide.
R.E.M. - Automatic For The People
I used to listen to this tape on my dad’s walkman every Saturday!
Fischerspooner - Odyssey
For girls who like to dance on the table…
Share your first big purchase.
The Chipmunks Christmas Tape
Sorry, Mom. I know I played this one way too many times.
Dntel "Life Is Full of Possibilities"
Um, because I am so naturally upbeat.
This album matches my inherent brooding personality.
I don’t think I’ve ever put it on before 11pm though . . . weird. Great late-night bus/muni music.
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust...
There was a very confused period of my teenage years when I was convinced that glam rock was making a comeback. That came and went very quick, but Ziggy always stayed with me. “Rock and Roll Suicide” is still one of my favorite songs.
The Reminder by Feist
I loved Let it Die, but this album totally blew me away. I listened to it everyday for a while!
And Out Come the Wolves-Rancid
I used to be cool when I was 14.
Ben Kweller
His tunes are catchy!
The Rhumb Line - Ra Ra Riot
Great pop hooks and moody lyrics. Ra Ra Riot is astounding live, too.
