Eyebrows for the Boston Girl. Yes, I Said Eyebrows.
Listen, Ladies. I'm going to help you, and you'll thank me later. If you do nothing else, pay attention to your eyebrows. Let me show you how.
Shape Them
Want an instant face lift? How about looking as if you’ve actually slept through the night? Getting your brows shaped can change your entire face. Don’t worry – because you’re somewhat limited by the brow shape nature gave you, you’ll still look like you, only better. Here are your options.
Waxing
Waxing is by far the most popular and desireable method of cleaning up your eyebrows. It produces clean, precise lines and the results typically last for at least two weeks. Don’t be intimidated by the thought of hot strips of wax being applied to your skin and then ripped off – honestly, the pain is quick and not as bad as you’d think.
For the best results, leave the waxing to the professionals. Aside from the fact that it’s always good to have someone who shapes brows for a living help you get that perfect arch, it’s simply much, much easier to have someone else apply dripping, messy wax to your brow area than if you were to do it yourself.
Here are some top-rated spots where you can go to lay back, close your eyes, and proceed to be prettied.
Body Rituals Day Spa
269 MIDDLESEX AVE MEDFORD, MA 02155
When I first made the decision years ago to go for my first brow wax, I went here, and I’ve never looked back. Owner Laureen is meticulous, and hires like-minded staff who are all excellent at what they do. That’s why Body Rituals was named Best Spa in Medford – and their long list of loyal clients agree.
When I moved away from my beloved Body Rituals Day Spa (above), I panicked. But after some trial and error, I found my Laureen: Eva at Interlocks. And since I’ve started seeing her at this always-buzzing salon, my brows have never looked better. She doesn’t rush, pays complete attention to detail, and makes your brows look the best they possibly can.

Luxlash on Newbury Street.
Treat yourself to a relaxing (yes, I said relaxing) session of brow waxing at this Best of Boston winner. It’s a great place to visit if you’re a waxing virgin (or, if you’re growing out a self-plucked horror show), because the experts at Luxlash will consult with you first to find the best brow shape for your face, and then get you there.

Still not willing to leave the waxing to the pros? If you must, you little go-getter, use a tiny wax warmer (like this one, available at Sally Beauty Supply) to heat up a tin of wax and give it a whirl. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Tweezing
Obsessively standing in front of the mirror with a pair of tweezers can render lopsided brows, overplucking, and, worse, the comma effect. None of these are good, but tweezing is certainly the cheapest and easiest way to quickly shape your brows. And, in many cases, the results last even longer than waxing.
This is a comma. Which belongs on a piece of paper, not above your eye.
The well-trained among us can attempt this themselves, but it requires a steady hand and some restraint. And, dilligence. It’s much easier to pluck a few stray hairs every few days rather than start from scratch every month.
Here’s a tip: get a professional waxing and then upkeep the shape with tweezing. Or, find a professional who offers tweezing services and let them have all the fun.
Pointed tweezers are simply the best kind to buy. The super-pointy tips will allow you to grab and yank out the most obscure and stubborn hairs you’ve got.
Want to let someone else do the tweezing? Go here. Best of Boston winners for 8 years, Michaud is THE place for complete individualized service and total attention to detail. For thirty “God, I need a drink…like NOW” minutes, you will be plucked to perfection. But, much like childbirth, the pain will be worth it – you’ll leave looking amazing. And you’ll even be back for more.

Laser
Once reserved for those with lots of cash, this method of hair removal is gaining in popularity due to falling prices and greater mainstream accessibility.
While it works wonders for larger areas of the body (like legs), not all laser hair removal places offer eyebrow shaping services. Not to worry – permament hair removal for shaping your brows probably isn’t the best idea. Brows trend thicker some years, thinner others; so you’ll want to have the option to grow them out whenever you’d like. However – that patch of hair between your brows? That will NEVER be in style. So if that’s a problem for you, permanent removal is a good thing.
It’s not painless (think tiny rubber bands being snapped against your face) and requires several sessions to get hairless. And it’s not for everyone – lasers work best on those with fair skin and dark hair, so consult with your laser hair removal specialist to see if you’re a good candidate.
Watch the professionals at VIVA use a laser to remove hair off this man’s chest. Now envision that laser moving up to your face. You know, near your eyes. Still interested?
VIVA Skin Care
3 NEW ENGLAND EXECUTIVE PARK BURLINGTON, MA 01803
VIVA is a professionally-staffed operation that runs more like a doctor’s office rather than a spa. But let’s face it, isn’t that exactly what you want? All services are performed by laser certified registered nurses and medical estheticians, and are physician supervised. Which brings total peace of mind when that laser touches your face.
Threading
Threading originated in India and the Middle East, and while it’s super popular in those parts, it hasn’t quite hit the mainstream here yet. Though it sounds a bit weird, some people swear by it and wouldn’t use anything else for brow hair removal.
A piece of twisted string is used to somehow, somehow remove hairs. This method actually works well for anyone with sensitive skin, since it’s done with no trauma to the top layer of skin.
I have no clue how this can possibly shape an eyebrow (let alone remove hair), but it does.
My Salon & Day Spa
1100 MASSACHUSETTS AVE ARLINGTON, MA 02476
While researching threading spots in Boston, I kept coming back to one name: Anu. By far the top threader in Boston, Anu now runs her own salon and spa and still threads away with precision and patience.

Brow Trends
As with anything style-related, brow shapes and thickness change. Today’s look is a bit thicker than in the recent past, but is always well-groomed and with nice arch.
Audrey Hepburn’s strong brows reflected the trends of her times.
Brooke Sheilds’ wild eyebrows were the craze of the 80’s.
Pamela Anderson still rocks the super-thin look of the 90’s, but pulls it off because they are the right length and dark enough to still have some drama.
Camilla Belle has a pair of the most coveted brows around – dramatic and on the full side.
Groom Them
Once you’ve achieved the perfect shape, you’ll want to make grooming your arches a part of your daily routine. The brow bandwagon is filled with tons of products to help you do just that.
Use a brow brush to keep brows smooth. Brushing hairs up and over will mimic their natural direction and open up your eyes.
Use tiny brow scissors to trim stray hairs that grow above your brow line. These are by Anastasia.
Fill in spares areas with brow powder or pencil, in a shade that matches your eyebrow color exactly.
Clear mascara is perfect for helping unruly brows stay put.
To Tint or not to Tint
That’s a really good question. If you watch even one episode of What Not to Wear, you’ll see resident makeup artist Carmindy lightening everyone and their brother’s brows. This is a purely personal choice and depends on so many factors: skin tone, hair color, brow color, eye color…there’s really no “right” answer. Lighter brows can brighten your face, but they can also wash it out. Dark brows can be too severe, but they’re also dramatic.
One factoid that may sway your decision: it’s against the law for Massachusetts salons to offer brow tinting services. So, trek up to New Hampshire if you’re interested, or try it at home.
