Do you want to soak in a bit of the real New Orleans but only have a day or two? My advice is to skip Bourbon Street all together and plan your stay around Frenchman Street instead. In fact, I offer this advice no matter how much time you have to linger. Avoid the tacky tourist shops, neon drinks and kareoke bars of our city's most overrated street and lose yourself on Frenchmen instead. Unlike Bourbon Street, Frenchman is about quality live music. You will find dozens of live acts playing Frenchman's clubs seven nights a week, often with no cover charge. There are charming old hotels and guest houses nearby as well, high on New Orleans hospitality and mystique with rates generally beating those of French Quarter hotels. And if you do find yourself in the mood to buy a tacky shot glass or neon drink, never fear--Bourbon Street is just a short stroll away.

Music Clubs on Frenchmen Street

Hear world class musicians, such as Irvin Mayfield, Ellis Marsalis, and Charmaine Neville live while dining on Shrimp Remoulade, BBQ Shrimp, and Gumbo in this intimate Jazz bistro.

See live acts seven nights a week, generally two acts per night, while sampling the large array of high quality draft beer DBA has on tap. I’ve seen everything from Outlaw-Country to Funk to Jazz to the undefinable in this club. It’s an awesome place to check out any night of the week. Stick around long enough and you never know who may show up. Stevie Wonder hopped into a Walter Wolfman Washington set here less than a year ago to play to a Tuesday night crowd.

One of my favorite New Orleans bars. I love how the dancers spill out onto the sidewalk due to lack of space inside this tiny place. See acts such as VaVaVoom, Washboard Chaz Blues Trio, New Orleans Jazz Vipers, the Hot Club of New Orleans and more. A favorite hang out of Uncle Lionell Batiste of the Treme Brass Band— a living New Orleans legend!I If you come on a Sunday between 1:30-6:00 there’s free food with drink purchase, but please remember to tip the cook!

The sign behind the bar says, “Positively NO POKING!” I don’t know what they mean by this, but it’s positively New Orleans and I like it. I like the bar as well. It’s small, relaxed, well-worn, and often features live music with no cover charge. If you climb the creaky staircase upstairs you’ll find Adolfo’s, one of the best kept dining secrets in the city. Dine on fresh seafood and Italian fare surrounded by funky art and a laid back atmosphere! I’ve heard nothing but great things about this place. Most wish it could remain a secret forever.

There are several awesome Frenchmen clubs I did not list, such as Cafe Brasil, Ray’s Boom Boom Room, and the Blue Nile, but they are all located right on this tiny Frenchman strip, so will be easy as pie for you to find when you get here.

Area Guest Houses

This bar and guest house combo is located just a short walk from both Frenchman Street and the French Quarter. The bar is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. They don’t offer live music, but are a good place to go before or after a Frenchmen Street gig. If you’re feeling adventurous (or shaggy, too sober and poor) stop by on a monday for a haircut and a shot for only $10. (I’m not making this up.) If you want a cool place to stay near the Frenchmen Street action (and within staggering distance from the French Quarter as well), reserve a room at the Royal Street Inn. Check out the Bukowski Room, or the Kiss and Tell Suite. All rooms are unique from one another; some offer balcony access, and all offer a lot more New Orleans feel than any room you can rent at the Marriott.
