Open Mic Nights: The 'mini-gig'

One of the first steps at getting into the scene is being aware of the realities. If you’re a brand new band, no matter what age the members, don’t expect to be booked at places like The Ogden or any major venue right away. It’s important to gradually gain a reputation. Start by booking a 20 minute set at a near by coffee shop, tavern or bar.  The key is to expect not to get paid and be alright with it! Mini-gigs are a good way to get your friends together. Enjoy the laid back atmosphere and have fun! Mini-gig’s such as these aren’t pointless! Every successful band had to start somewhere!

Don't over-do "the look"

We all know it must feel super “rockin” to be the new hot band in town. However, be sure not to take the “rockin” too hard. It’s a good idea to have an edgy look when showing up to a new venue. Throw on a pair of snazzy kicks, some skinny jeans, an old warn-down tee and you’re good to go! The image, of course, says a lot. Avoid that awful, choppy “emo” hair cut. Along with too many accessories (wrist bands, belts, patches). As ‘Greenday’ as you might look, heavy black eyeliner on a guy really just comes across as lame and unprofessional. Also, wearing your band’s merchandise is just a little too cheesy. That “rockstar look” could make or break you (sadly), so take it somewhat seriously. This is an instance where the whole: would my mother let me out of the house moto might come in handy.

PROMOTION

It’s easy to get your music around the general area when you’ve got the support of  friends and family. However, forming a wider fan-base takes extra promotion. A great way to start off in the local scene is creating a myspace music. The Myspace music allows you to upload your music, display shows and send out flyers. The more popularity you receive on Myspace, the more fans.
Along with Myspace there are other ways to upload your music files. Purevolume is another popular site to hold your music and background information.
As far as flyers and posters, there are a bunch of websites with trendy templates to get you started.
Once you find or create a flyer, the cheapest way to make copies is a trip to Kinko’s! 18 cents per sheet is a great way to promote your shows!
