It seems like the economic crisis is on EVERYONE'S minds nowadays. And while I don't deny its importance, part of me is worried that environmental initiatives are going to take a back seat, partly because people deem them too expensive. And while times are tough, it doesn't mean that we should ignore environmental issues, in fact, doing things to help the environment can actually SAVE you money!!! Now who would have thought that, eh? So while you might have to prolong that Prius purchase, you can lower your water bill (buy purchasing low-flow shower heads) and save on groceries by leaving meat off your grocery list.

Save Water

While we try to make ourselves forget that Los Angeles is a desert with our manicured lawns, the truth of the matter is Los Angeles is, well, a desert. And thanks to our lack of rain and our burgeoning population water is quite the precious commodity around here. So here are some ways you stop the Mojave from creeping forward and swallowing LA whole.

Home Depot the

1200 S Flower St, Burbank, CA 91502

Home Depot might not seem to be the most fascinating place to spend your Saturday afternoon right now, but you might just change your tune once you see your water bill after purchasing low-flow shower heads and a low-flush toilet.

While I’m sure your pansies look just lovely, it’s time to bid those water suckers goodbye. Instead, get thee to a nursery (ha, it almost sounds like nunnery) and buy some succulents. And that doesn’t mean you have to buy an ugly-looking cactus either; there are tons of attractive succulents that are prickle-free.

Call me a horticulturalist nerd, but I think these look pretty cool.

Compost!

Sure, it’s smelly and reminiscent of what you might imagine a pig would eat, but composting is an excellent way to put your eco-garbage to good use.

The Department of Public Works has an awesome program designed to get you composting in your backyard. The program has 11 Smart Gardening Learning Centers (one of which is located at the Arboretum), which are equipped with various educational and demonstration materials designed to teach you about composting as well as eco-friendly gardening practices. They can even teach you how to compost using red worms! How about that.

I Feel So Used...

While buying eco-friendly and organic clothes are all well and good— it’s even better to buy vintage. Reusing is the first and foremost way you can help the environment, and what better way to reuse than diving headfirst into a bin of glorious vintage togs? Plus, fashion repeats itself every 20 years anyway, so chances are you can find something that looks VERY similar to that 80s-inspired heart print Marc Jacobs frock you’ve been eyeing at your local vintage store. And chances are, it’ll be a fraction of the price.

I used to drive by this vintage shop everyday on my way to work and they have the most DIVINE gowns and dresses. And now that “Mad Men” has throughly infiltrated our national consciousness buying vintage is now more “in” than ever. However, if you’re looking for something cheap and flirty, this is probably not the place— they deal in “couture,” dahling. But if you’re looking for something sophisticated and undeniably one-of-a-kind (and you want to boost the economy by dropping some serious cash), then put this shop in your GPS stat.

Look fabulous while shrinking your carbon footprint!

Go Meat-Less

While avid carnivores may still rebut this statement, leading a vegetarian lifestyle is in fact better for the environment. Have you ever heard of a butternut squash emitting harmful (and foul-smelling) methane gas? I rest my case.

There are PLENTY of places to go meat-less in LA (see the link below), but this is one of my faves. The location is kinda off the beaten path, but if you ever find yourself in the middle of the SFV, then you should definitely hit this place up. (Get the tempeh!) And if you avoid the Valley like the plague you can always pick up FYH salad dressings and whatnot at places like Whole Foods.

Chicken-free chicken may sound icky, but it’s actually pretty darn tasty.

Green Los Angeles

Just because Los Angeles is already smoggy, it’s not an excuse to make it smoggier!

Give Your Car a Break

I know it’s hard, nigh impossible, to live in Los Angeles without a car. And while I don’t think it’s sound advice to go out and torch your 1999 CR-V right now, I think it is sound advice to lay off the gas guzzling every now and again.

Union Station

800 N Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

So call public transportation in LA what you will (a debacle, a waste, a poor excuse for a transportation system), but you can’t say that it doesn’t exist. And while the Metro is hardly the subway, it does provide a somewhat convenient way to get to parts of LA, including Downtown. Will the Metro ever expand to Santa Monica like they say it will, maybe not, but we can still dream, can’t we?

Helen's Cycles

2472 Lincoln Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405

There are TONS of places to buy a bike in LA, and I’m just putting down Helen’s because that’s where I got mine— you’re just as good going to Performance or I Martin or somewhere like that. I road my bike to work this past year and it was pretty awesome. I felt much less irritable when I got to work and I saved a bunch of money on gas. Not to mention my legs got that cool, I-ride-my-bike-to-work toned look.

Maybe I’ve inhaled too much pollution, but this bike looks pretty sexy.

Go Organic

If you’re gonna go green, then you better start buying organic fruit and veggies. Not only are organics better for you and the environment due to the fact that they’re pesticide-free, but since farmers’ market produce is locally grown, it doesn’t require large amounts of gas to get to your fridge.

Hollywood Farmers Market

6605 Hollywood Blvd Ste 220, Los Angeles, CA 90028

The Hollywood Farmers’ Market place is smack dab in the middle of Hollywood (right by the ArcLight and Amoeba). The market takes place on Sunday mornings, so don’t be grossed out when you see a bunch of post-coital hipster couples.

Tender Greens

9523 Culver Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232

I LOVE this restaurant. It’s pretty simple: just soups, salads, and hot plates (think meat and potatoes), but everything here is very fresh and tasty. Plus, they get most of their produce from local farms, and all the meats are hormone free. So if you’re going to eat out without breaking the bank, this is an excellent place to do it.
