Do your pipes vibrate when you shut off the water? Here are some possible causes: First check and see if there are any loose pipe clamps, and tighten them. If two pipes are are running next to each other, separate them with a length of split foam pipe insulation so they can’t touch. If your pipes still knock loudly then go silent, you can install a ‘Water Hammer Arrestor, or have your local plumber do this. A Water Hammer Arrestor is a section of pipe which traps air. Air is compressible and water isn’t, so it will act as a shock absorber. If your system already has a water hammer, then it’s likely the air has escaped. Shut off your water main and drain the line, and then refill it. In this case, install a pressure regulator valve on the main line. If you already have one, chances are that it has gone bad, since they only have a service life of 10-15 years.
