Digital SLR Camera Shopping Guide
Check out this buyers guide to the top four entry-level Digital SLR cameras. As an off and on photography enthusiast since High School, I've had a number of different cameras; from the black and white manual 35mm I used in my classes to my current Canon PowerShot G2. I'm finding a renewed interest in the hobby lately and have decided to pick up a Digital SLR as they have become quite affordable and are packed with features. I'll be adding more info about each camera as my search continues, for now here is a quick overview with some links and photos from Flickr.
Canon Rebel XTi
Amazon: $528 (Body Only)
The Canon Digital Rebel XTi (EOS-400D) is a most impressive entry-level digital SLR. It offers great photo quality and performance, plenty of features (most notably, a dust reduction system), a large LCD, and plenty of accessories. The main downside is its design: it’s pretty small, not terribly easy to hold, and more “plasticky” than other D-SLRs.
Nikon D40x
Amazon: $530 (Body Only) $488 (D40 x/ Lens)
If you’re ready to enter the world of digital SLRs, the Nikon D40x is a great way to do it. It offers a compact, portable body, great performance and photo quality, and a really user friendly interface. I wouldn’t write off the original D40 either — it offers the same features, just with fewer pixels and slightly weaker performance, for around $200 less.
Olympus E-410
Amazon: $422 (w/ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens)
The Olympus EVOLT E-410 is the smallest digital SLR on the market. Designed as a “step up” for point-and-shoot camera users, the E-410 features a live view LCD, plenty of scene modes, and a relatively easy-to-use interface. The camera has some hits and some misses, and it’s at its best when you tweak the settings a bit. Once you’ve done that you’ll find a camera that holds up well against the entry-level competition. If you get along with the compact size (I don’t), then the E-410 is well worth a look.
Sony Alpha A200
Amazon: $599.00 (w/ 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens)
The Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 is a very capable entry-level D-SLR that needs improvement in one important area: JPEG photo quality. The A200 offers a lot of bang for the buck, with its 10 Megapixel CCD, built-in image stabilization, snappy performance, and great battery life.
