Tomato, TomAto- It's All In The Accent
When I first moved from Nashville to Chicago, I was so confused. I couldn't understand ANYTHING! Across America dialect changes throughout every region and state. At times, we have problems understanding one another's accents. Sometimes I forget just how different they are until I go home. Dialect is a beautiful thing, even when you don't understand what others are saying at times.
Disclaimer:
Note: This guide is not based on actual facts, just based on my opinion of the various dialects in each region of the United States. In my mind they are facts and I make fun of them often. Take from this what you will.
In The South We Say Things Differently...
“I’m gunna put it up.” = “I’m gunna put it away.”
“I’m fixing to…” = “I’m getting ready to…”
“Hey, ya’ll!” = “Hey, you guys!”
“Here’s a warshcloth.” = “Here’s a washcloth.”
Now, to sum things up, by saying South I mean: TN, GA, LA, AL, NC, SC, KY, VA, WV or sometimes TX can be considered the South. They talk like us, anyway.
I think Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers say it best.
Sometimes You Feel Like Your At A Theme Park
Wherever you travel to, outside of your original habitat, is going to seem like a theme park. Well, at least thats how I feel when I move from place to place. Even in our own country, I am still amazed at what I hear.
Unique New York
“Hey! Wassa madda whichoo?” or “Give me a cwaffee.”
While I was living in New York, I had to keep from laughing at every native New Yorker, because it sounded strange to me. I learned to love that accent, and still do.
The Northern Folk
This includes: MI, MN, WI. These people do not fear the cold, and they are so close to Canada that they actually sound Canadian.
For instance, they say things such as, “Don’t ya know.” or “I went out on the ruff.” or “Who’s a what’s it.” My all time favorite is, “I am going to boil an Eeeeeg.”
California Is It's Own Country
My theory is that California is going to break off and become it’s own country one day. It will succeed from the United States. That’s a crazy thought, huh?
There are so many unique sections of California that do not seem to be connected as the same state. For instance, we have northern and southern California, with San Francisco and Los Angeles thrown in there. Enough said.
Their accents are well, laid back, casual, and “Awesome, dude.”
This will give you a thorough look at those various accents.
A Country To Be Proud Of
Respect your elders. For they have seen this country change and change and change for years. If you have a dialect question, I’m sure they would know more than I. Plus, I just thought this picture was funny.
Test out your knowledge and see if you know where these people are from.
The West
This includes al the other states, out there besides, California.
Oh, yeah I love the west. I always think of cowboys and Indians though. Thanks Hollywood! The accent out there sounds to me, like a combo of the laid back southern accent, mixed with the Midwestern accent.
I’l call it, the relaxed accent. With some spittin’ and horse ridin’.
The United States
Divided by regions.
What Kind of Coke Ya Want?
What Kind of coke? Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Coke, Pepsi, etc…
I used to ask this question when I moved to the Midwest and I would get laughed at by those who would reply,
“What do you mean what kind? There is only one kind of coke.”
Some people call it, soda. Some call it pop, or just soda pop. I actually cringe when I hear “Soda Pop.” ughhhhhh.
Florida, Not Many Words For You
Now, Florida has so many accents on top of a slight southern accent. This is due to the fact that all of the old people move here when they retire. So I don’t think it is unique in dialect anymore.
The Northeast
I don’t think I would consider KY or OH a part of the Northeast, but that’s my opinion. Anyway, the Northeast… the northeast. Hmmmm I’m not sure I can group these in any category. Boston definitely has it’s own unique “Baaaston” accent.
Any Northeasterners out there who want to comment?
The dude talking definitely encompasses the accent.
The Midwest Region
Ok, so we’ve got the Midwest here. They sound very nasal when they speak. For instance, “I’m going to claaaaaaaass.” Do you really have to draw your a’s out like that? or this is great, “I’ll have a caaaaffee.”
Huh?
At least they are nice in the Midwest. Just like the South, manners still remain.
A Country United
Despite our various accents and preferred state of living, we are the United States of America, people! We should be proud of our various dialects and NOT be ashamed of them.
Stand up! Say “ya’ll” if ya want to. It’s all good!
