Guide to the Deliciously Healthy in Boston

-620087268

Just because something's good for you, doesn't mean it has to be bland and boring. In fact, sometimes the healthiest foods can be the tastiest. Don't believe me? Read this guide to find where you can get some of the healthiest, but also most delicious food in Boston. You'll soon realize that eating healthy isn't so bad!

B. Good

I kind of think B. Good is too good to be true. But I want to believe it, so I do. It’s all that good fast food that you don’t usually eat because you feel horrible and guilty after eating it. But you don’t have to feel that way at B. Good! Their typical handburger only has 7 grams of fat and 429 calories. And their BIG and delicious. They also have veggie bugers, turkey burger, and chicken burgers.

Even better are B. Good fries, which have 4 grams of fat and 285 calories (and only cost $1.90).

B. Good’s milkshakes are made with non-fat frozen yogurt and skim milk and are a pretty good size. Their fruit shakes are fat free and only have between 209-228 calories.

The best part about B. Good is that it’s healthy, but you’d never know it from the taste of the food!

Are you kidding that all of this is healthy? WOW.

Healthy Grocery Stores

Both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods offer more healthy and organic options than the average grocery store.

One of my favorite things about Trader Joe’s is their fabulous flash-frozen fish department, while Whole Foods has an amazing selection of fresh fish and meats.

Obviously not everything in these stores is nutritious and healthy, but they do offer some great options.

And who could forget the amazing wine selection at Whole Foods? Remember, red wine is good for your heart!

Good-For-You Dessert

Who doesn’t love a good frozen yogurt? But just because it’s frozen yogurt, doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Oftentimes, frozen yogurt has less fat than ice cream, but is loaded with sugars to make up for the taste.

But BerryLine is different. Because it actually is yogurt. With all kinds of toppings. And the shop in Harvard Square puts the nutrition information right up on the wall, so you know exactly what you’re getting. A small yogurt only has 125 calories and a large has 300. Of course, these numbers go up if you load your yogurt with candy toppings, but there are so many delicious and beautiful fruits (plus granola, cereals, etc) that make for much better toppings!

BerryLine is my new favorite place in Boston and will probably become my summer home. If only the shop was a bit bigger, I really would move in.

Grezzo Restaurant

Grezzo is Boston’s first vegan raw-food restaurant in Boston. The kitchen doesn’t even have a stove! It may sound kind of weird, but the food is actually very gourmet and delicious.

Grezzo obviously has the typical salads with raw veggies, but they also have steaks made without meat and instead with papayas (gasp!) and cheeses made from nuts. This is definitely the perfect place to go for a unique, but still classy and gourmet experience.

And when all else fails, joining a gym never hurts when you’re trying to stay healthy.

Eat Raw Fish

Sushi has a reputation for being healthy if you eat it right. And it’s oh, so delicious. And Boston has tons of good sushi restaurants to choose from!

How to Get the Most Nutrition Out of Your Sushi

  • Stay away from sushi rolls that include mayonnaise or cream cheese in them.
  • Stay away from sushi with tempura; that means the filling is fried.
  • While the rolls are fine to eat, remember that rice isn’t the healthiest food. So try to eat more of the sashimi (fish without the rice) or get your rolls with brown rice if possible.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce.
  • order steamed veggies, seaweed salad, or edamame with your sushi.

Stay away from the fried items like this tempura. Yes, it looks delicious, but it’s not very nutritious!

See, now isn’t this better? Nice, fresh sashimi tastes delicious and is fabulous for your health.

Eat Your Veggies

Haymarket is an open-air fruit and vegetable market (in Haymarket Square, duh), where you can buy really cheap, really fresh produce.

It’s always quite an experience to go to Haymarket on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s always packed with customers and vendors trying to sell you their produce. If you’re trying to buy, say, a pound of apples for $1, the vendor across the way will spot you and start yelling that he will sell you a pound of apples for 50 cents.

You can easily leave Haymarket with way more produce than you will ever be able to eat before it goes bad. But it’s so cheap, you won’t really feel too bad about it. The produce is the freshest on Friday, but vendors will often sell it to you for next to nothing on Saturdays.

Make Your Own Salad

Sebastians won the award for best salad bar in Boston in 2007, so head to one of the Boston locations for a super healthy, fresh meal.

Salads Don't Neccessarily = Healthy

When you think of a salad you usually think of a healthy meal. Or a light eater. “Sure, I’ll just have the salad.” But what about when you load your salad with iceburg lettuce, cheese, bacon bits, hardboiled eggs, and creamy salad dressing? You’re probably better off getting the steak.

So be careful when you’re hanging out at the salad bar. And remember salads don’t always = healthy. You have to make the healthy choices.

Boston
I love cupcakes, the color pink, writing, technology, blogging, trying to learn Japanese, and walking from one end of Boston to the other. I make it my goal to try one new thing in Boston every week, but sometimes I find things I love so much, I just can't tear myself away from them. Boston...
