So you want to date a blogger

-621299308

With new bloggers popping up every day, you're bound to find yourself dating one. But bloggers require a whole new set of rules when it comes to dating. What should be a fun and carefree relationship can quickly become a mess. So before you commit, here are a few things you should think about.

Pro: Your blogger beau is very self-aware.
Con: And by self-aware I mean self-centered.

Having a blog is like running for president; you’ve got to have a bit of an ego. While it’s fine to date someone who is in touch with their emotions, do you really want to hear about all the minute tasks of their day-to-day life? Bloggers write what they know best, and sometimes that just happens to be themselves.

Tread lightly

Pro: People get to know that they love you.
Con: People get to know that they hate you.

While it might not be this extreme, how your relationship progresses will be a topic for discussion. And trust me, it will be discussed. Comments will be made, dates will be analyzed and everyone will have an opinion on that last fight you had. No, you don’t get a say in any of it.

Pro: You make a whole bunch of new friends through their network.
Con: If you break up, and let’s face it, you will, you have to divide up all of your blogger friends.

There’s nothing more annoying after a breakup than divvying up the readers. That is, of course, if you end up with the better or bigger group – then you’re totally a winner. But ultimately it’s not up to you. Those readers have chosen sides and they are not afraid to let you or your ex know it.

Think of the fans!!!

Pro: You really enjoy reading their blog.
Con: They stop blogging.

Sometimes bloggers feel the need to censor themselves. Even though you really love their raw honesty, the fact that you read it will change their focus.

Meet the network

Pro: You are never really alone.
Con: You are never alone…really.

Your blogger’s network comes with you wherever you two go. With cell phones making it so easy to check sites like Twitter and Facebook, it’s no surprise that @awesomeface knows about the spill you took while ice skating before you could pull yourself up. I suggest getting used to the alert on their iPhone or flashing light on their BlackBerry. Their phone will be getting more action than you will.

Pro: People get to see you all dolled up.
Con: People also get to see how you look in your sweats with uncombed hair.

It’s flattering when people tell you how cute you look and strangers tell you what’s so great about you. It’s not so flattering when a photo you wouldn’t even show to your best friend hits the Blogosphere. At least on Facebook you can untag yourself. On a blog, it’s there forever.

So...

Pro: You don’t have to listen to all the insignificant details about their day.
Con: You have to read it instead.

The blog has replaced the phone. During my relationship with a blogger I found myself struggling to share something that he didn’t already read on my blog. If you’re both bloggers, well those obligatory nightly phone calls should be pretty short then.

The unknown

Not everyone makes it known that they have a blog. You could be the topic of many posts and not even know it! Next time you think someone is looking at you oddly in the grocery store, ask yourself if you’ve been a good boyfriend or girlfriend lately. You never know what that person read.
