From the Coffee Slut who brought you A Guide to Mom Pants, I now bring you your Guide to Dad Shirts. What are dad shirts you ask? Good question, but I'm sure your dad wears one too. If your dad dresses like George Bush or John McCain on his days off, well that's a great example. It seems that when a man hits his 50's the mind thinks, "vacation"? Maybe they forget their sense of style. Either way, he has turned to the Dad Shirt! Which one is your dad?
One Size Too Big
By now, our dads have gained a little weight, and it sticks to their bellies. They are also balding, and they need something to distract others from these signs of age.
Why not wear an over sized Hawaiian shirt?
It covers that belly
The floral patterns are flattering
If you spill something on it, who’s gunna notice?

Maybe it's Time to Break This Habit
Every time I go home, my dad seems to be getting slightly older than when I saw him last. He also has a new dad shirt in his closet too. How can I go home and break him of this dad shirt wearing habit, you ask? Simple:
- Tell him he dresses like John McCain. If he’s a Democrat he’ll change his style real fast.
- Tell him you need to go to the mall and it would be fun if he came along. Ya know, for some bonding time.
- Inform him that Father’s Day is everyday and you want to buy him something special.
- Pick out the trendiest button down you can.
- Buy some cool shades to go along with that trendy button down.
- Express has a nice Men’s section, take him there.
- Don’t laugh at him.
Polo Power
The Polo is the ultimate Dad Shirt.
The Polo must have any logo on the left side of the shirt that he wants. It could be a company he previously worked for, or a company he just thought was “cool”.
Next time your dad puts one on, nicely suggest that he wear only the shirt underneath it. Try to persuade your dad of wearing something OTHER than the Dad Shirt. FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY!

If your dad won’t give up the polo, suggest this look:
Polo underneath the button up sweater.
Most dads were around in the 50’s. So let’s bring that style back. Many young guys these days have acquired this sweater, polo look. Even a nice T-Shirt underneath would be appropriate. Tell them they can be young again!
Top 10 Obvious Signs That Your Dad Wears "Dad Shirts"
- One size too big.
- Thinks he looks “cool” wearing it.
- It has some sort of flower pattern on it.
- Always has a collar.
- Might take up golfing, just so he can wear the shirt.
- Sleeps in the shirt.
- Wants to go on vacations and wear nothing BUT the shirt.
- Is in denial of his loss of style (if he ever had any).
- Takes the fam to Disney World every year, just so he can get a cheap version of the last shirt he bought in Hawaii.
- Feels 20 years younger.

Very talented they are, but if that was my dad… umm I think I’d ask him to change his name (at least for the show.)

Retirement Options
For some dad’s, retirement is what they work for their entire lives. My dad, however, is still going strong and in his 40’s. I ask, with Retirement at least 10 years away, why is the Dad Shirt a consistent staple in his wardrobe?
A simple answer: Retirement = Vacation. Vacation means Hawaiian shirt and Hawaiian shirt means FREEDOM!

Just Dancin'
Sometimes when they put the shirt on, overconfidence overcomes them. Suddenly, they can dance, leap, and begin cracking jokes. They think the ladies are checking them out and they feel 20 years younger.
I haven’t quite figured this out yet, but just watch them next time you’re out and you will see what I mean.
Mr. Rogers Had Style
This man had GREAT style and should be a role model for dads everywhere. Mr. Rogers was older, funny, and wise. The way he tied his shoes was such an inspiration! The button up shirt with the tie and bright sweater adds a nice layer of casual meets dressy. Thanks, Mr. Rogers!

The Hip Look
Ok, your dad may not be Brad Pit, but that’s okay! Adding a bit of his own personal flair and personality to his wardrobe is what it’s all about.
Help him figure out his own style. I’m still trying to convince my dad that a kilt is not exactly a great stylish choice.
