Guide to Boston Publications You Should be Reading

Want to learn more about what's going on in Boston? You may not have realized that Boston has tons of publications specific to the city. Whether you want to learn about the latest news, want to get some shopping advice, or just need a good laugh, Boston has the newspaper (some free!) or magazine (some free!) perfect for you!
Awesome guide! More reads to add to my magazine addiction.
Boston Magazine
I’ve been a long-time subscriber to Boston Magazine, though it tends to cater to a more, ahem, wealthy class than I belong to.
So I can’t afford half of the things being advertised in the magazine and I can barely afford most the restaurants featured, but the articles are all very well-written and relevant to Boston living.
My favorite Boston Magazine issue is always their Best of Boston issue, which highlights the best of the best in the city. With everything from the best restaurants to the best bartenders, to the best carwashes, I covet this issue so I always know where to go.
Party Favors- Best of Boston
Of course my favorite bakery in the world won Best of Boston for wedding cakes. They make the best cakes/cupcakes I’ve ever had. Period.
Follow this link to subscribe to Boston magazine. Trust me, you’ll love it!
The Improper Bostonian
Another freebie, how can you resist? I can’t. Improper Bostonian is another magazine I pick up whenever I spot a new issue. Why wouldn’t I? Their slogan is “Boston. What’s happening. What’s hot. Every two week.”
This publication is my go-to source for learning about the classier events in Boston. For instance, this week I learned that the Taste of Beacon Hill is coming up as is Beckett Bowl. Always looking for new, fun things to do, the Improper is always here to help me out.
The Boston Globe
The Boston Globe is the most widely circulated newspaper in Boston and is definitely the daily paper you should be reading for Boston news and national and world news.
A part of the Boston Globe, Boston.com is like one constantly updating online newspaper.
If you walk into any office building in Boston, it’s likely that at least one employee will be surfing around Boston.com getting updated on the latest news.
The Boston Herald
The Boston Herald is Boston’s “less serious” newspaper. In tabloid-format, the Herald is a bit more light-hearted than the Globe.
Buy it in the morning, or wait until the afternoon and get it for free. In fact, the Boston Herald salesmen will pretty much shove it in your face as you’re walking down the street after work.
Weekly Dig
When I need a good laugh, I pick up the Weekly Dig, which is, surprise, a weekly publication. And free!
The Dig claims they are ”the only publication in Boston that has an absolute lock on the 21-34 year-old demographic everyone’s after.” And I agree. The Dig is full of sarcasm, mockery, and just plain old humor. And what 21-34 year-old doesn’t love those things?
Dan Savage
Another reason to love the Weekly Dig? It carries Dan Savage’s column, “Savage Love.” Always an entertaining and educational read!
Stuff@Night
Stuff@Night is one of my essential pick-ups whenever I see a new issue as I’m walking down Beacon Street. For free (free!), I get tons of information I need about events, openings, and more going-ons in Boston. Some might call it a “chick magazine,” but I think Stuff@Night is for everyone, even if its ads do tend to be more focused on ladies.
There’s even a “Booty Call” section. What? Yeah, there’s a phone number you can call when you’re out and drunk (instead of drunk dialing your ex). If Stuff@Night likes your drunken message enough, they’ll publish it.

Boston Metro
The free daily you see everyone reading on the T in the morning. Or if you aren’t on the T until the afternoon, you’ll see pages of this newspaper spread all over the floors.
OK, so it’s not the most sophisticated paper, but it gets the job done. You can catch up on all your morning news, including lots of entertainment information. In an easy-to-read format, you’d be silly not to pick the Metro up (otherwise you’ll just be reading over someone else’s shoulder; trust me).
(The Former) Boston Now
Remember exiting the T station after your morning commute and having the Boston Metro attack you on one side and Boston Now attack you on the other? Well, those days are over as of April 14, when the free daily, Boston Now, ceased publication.
So, what happened to it? According to the paper, it had to shut down “immediately” due to “rapidly deteriorating economic conditions in Iceland where interest rates reached 15.5% Thursday, the krona, their currency, has declined over 20% against the dollar since January, and inflation is now at 8.7%.” The newspaper had its primary investors in Iceland.
Oh well. Boston Now was especially known for its errors and typos. Guess you’re stuck with the Metro now.
Like the Red Sox much?
Yes, in case you didn’t notice, Boston publications are pretty obsessed with our Red Sox. And why shouldn’t they be?
Write about the Red Sox and readers will come. It’s that simple.
The Boston Phoenix is all about arts and entertainment. This paper has everything going on in Boston. Literally every single show, concert, etc. going on in the city. Oh, and it’s free too. How could it get any better?
The Boston Phoenix currently has up its list of the 100 unsexiest men. Much of the list is spot-on- Roger Clemens comes in at #1 and Spencer Pratt at #2.
And some I really don’t agree with. Ryan Seacrest (sorry, I like him!), Dane Cook, Brody Jenner, and Chris Daughtry are all on the list. Surely there are many unsexier men than these!
But Tom Brady? How is Tom Brady on the list of unsexy men? I demand a recount!
Really, Boston Phoenix? Tom Brady? So what exactly do you consider sexy?
Lola
Oh, Lola, you know just how to get me. You can’t use the tagline “A Woman’s Guide to Fasion – Shopping – Events” and not expect me to read it.
A fairly new free monthly, you can actually find Lola in locations all around Massachusetts, not just Boston (though it does call itself “Boston’s New Best Friend”)
Filled with articles that women need to read, plus tons of shopping advice for the fashionable and savvy Bostonian women, you need to be reading Lola too.
Skirt!
Skirt! is a free monthly magazine especially for women. There are Skirt! magazines for different cities and now Boston has its very own. Basically, Skirt! allows you to get your fill of everything from shopping, beauty, career, and feminism.
Like I didn’t already have enough Boston publications to read, I have definitely added Skirt! to my list!
