Gifts for Guys in Denver

I'm a guy, I'm 42 and I don't like sports memorabilia. I'm hard to shop for. Here are some ideas if you know someone like me.

My suggestions are organized from least expensive to most expensive, more or less.

#1 - Beer

If you are on a tight budget, there really is only one choice: beer. A really nice bottle of beer is a beautiful thing. I have a few recommendations for something really special: Meantime Indian Pale Ale – this is as good as anything you’ll get straight from the tap in London; Sam Smith’s Organic Ale – also outstanding; or one of the many fantastic Belgian ales for sale at Mondo Vino in Denver. The staff at Mondo Vino are terrific and can help you make the right choice. They also have one of the best wine selections in Denver and expertise to match.

If you are not on a tight budget, consider one of the beers above as an add-on to any of the gifts below.
Beer = happy.

#2 - A Really Nice Map

I like art and all, but when it comes right down to it, I’d usually rather look at a map. Maps are cool. When you are sitting in your office trying to make your boss happy with a spreadsheet, a map reminds you of better places and the adventure that awaits.

#3 - Music Paraphenalia

Ok, a little secret. It may be twenty-odd years since I saw Nick Cave at the I-Beam, but I still consider that a bigger part of my identity than anything on my LinkedIn profile. For most guys, there is a band or an era that represents the quintessence of cool. Whatever it is, you will find something related at Twist & Shout. Owned by one of Denver’s great gurus of music, Twist & Shout has an encyclopedic collection of cd’s, LP’s and tour shirts to suit all tastes. There are even boxing nuns if you come up dry.

#4 - Even Better Than Beer?

This one is good if you share the same bed as the person you are shopping for. Yes, you yourself could be the best present he gets. If you are concerned that beer might come out ahead, try one of the places below to up the ante. Sexy lingerie and a toy or two and he’ll be counting the days until his next birthday.

#5 - A Shirt That Fits

I am 6’ 1” and 175 pounds – pretty typical build. Even so, I have never owned a shirt that fit. Until recently, that is. Metroboom makes shirts that are measured and cut to fit perfectly. Most of my wardrobe came from the clearance rack at REI, but my favorite shirt came from Metroboom. Few guys will buy a tailored shirt for themselves, but unless your guy came off the rack at Nordstrom’s, he will love this gift.

#6 - The Most Comfortable Shoes Ever

I travel a lot and have long been in search of the perfect shoe. My search was over when I found Pikolinos. My criteria were: suitable for work but stylish, light and packable, and wears like a moccasin. Not all guys will have the same taste, but if they do this shoe is perfection. The Walking Company carries a variety of Pikolinos, with several locations in the metro area.

# 7 - Flyfishing

This one is tricky – in my experience fly fishermen fall into one of two camps – gear heads and stingy bastards. The gear heads are picky and have probably bought themselves several lifetimes of gear already. The stingy bastards won’t let go of their favorite reel until they are dead in the ground. On the other hand, many of us don’t yet fall into either camp, because we can’t honestly call ourselves fly fishermen. Blue Quill Angler has top notch classes taught by top notch guides. The classes are the real deal too. By the second day he will be out in the river thinking like a trout and loving life.
