My Favorite Restaurants in Seattle

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

I used to go to Seattle every couple of weeks for work. Seattle + expense account = good eats! If you're not on an expense account, a few of these places are a little spendy, but damn the food is good.

Seattle has many excellent owner-operated restaurants. I’ve been to a lot of them, and it is difficult to pick favorites on the basis of food alone. Each of the places I have selected is a great place to spend an evening in addition to being a great place for food. You’ll feel comfortable in a t-shirt, but any of them would impress a date as well.

Marjorie

2331 2nd Ave, Seattle, WA 98121

To paraphrase Laurie Anderson, talking about Marjorie is like dancing about architecture. Words just don’t do the trick. It’s not just how great the food is. The owner Marjorie sets a tone that is casual, friendly, hip and totally unpretentious. And then the food. I’ve eaten there a number of times, and if I must provide an adjective, it is: sublime.

Matt's In the Market

94 Pike St Ste 32, Seattle, WA 98101

I went to Matt’s a few times when it was four tables and a bunsen burner. I’ve heard that it has expanded a bit recently, but the idea is the same. Perfect, simple food. The menu is short and based on what’s fresh. This is a great place to go if you really love great food, but don’t give a crap about all of the other foo-fa-ra of high end restaurants. Matt’s is not cheap, but for what you get its a bargain.

Serious Pie

316 Virginia St, Seattle, WA 98101

If pizza is like sex, then I’m glad I’ve never experienced the carnal equivalent of Serious Pie. Once you’ve tried it, no other pizza will satisfy you.

I had the roasted mushroom and truffle cheese pie once, and now I can’t order anything else.

Palace Kitchen the

2030 5th Ave, Seattle, WA 98121

I’ve had some great meals at Palace Kitchen, but it is also a good place to saddle up to the bar and snack on some tasty food while you share pints with a friend. Palace Kitchen is always bustling, and a good place to go to wind up for a big night out, or wind down at the end.

13 Coins

125 BOREN AVE N SEATTLE, WA 98109

(206) 682-2513

Where else can you dine on martinis and crab cakes at 2:00 AM? Ok, besides New York, where else? The food is good not great, but the atmosphere is The Godfather meets Twin Peaks, and you’ll have plenty of company if you are looking for nourishment after (or during) a bender.

Elysian Fields

542 1st Ave S, Seattle, WA 98104

Great beer, great staff, great food. Sitting outside and quaffing a bitter in the afternoon sun is like, well, the Elysian Fields.

Coffee & Crumpets in Seattle

This guide mentions the Crumpet Shop, which is one of my favorites as well. Stick with tea, though, as the espresso is mediocre.
