Conferences in New York: Javits Center, Environs, and What You Need to Know

If you are traveling to New York for a conference at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, this is the guide for you. Find your away around the city, dine at recommended restaurants, and fill your down time with exciting events.

The Big Apple Welcomes You

New York needs no introduction, but it does need an infinite amount of guides to help you navigate what the city has to offer. While it is the most populated of U.S. cities, the island of Manhattan (1 of 5 boroughs) is fairly small, measuring up at only 22 square miles.

While there are the obvious landmarks-Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Stock Exchange, Times Square-New York is much more than these postcard-worthy places! Amidst all of the hustle and bustle are small, intimate restaurants, trendy wine bars, beautiful parks, numerous museums, and one-of-a-kind shops.

The Transportation Basics

There are three major airports servicing the New York area, a bus station, two train stations, and numerous subways, and local buses to get you from one place to another. Pick up maps and schedules wherever you go, and contrary to popular belief, New Yorkers are actually quite friendly and willing to help with directions. Just ask!

Night on the Town

You’ve had a long day and are ready to kick back with a martini in hand. The following nightlife venues are sophisticated, but not stuffy.

Brandy Library Lounge

25 N Moore St, New York, NY 10013

Despite the name, this is not a library, nor does it even have any books, save for the quintessential drink-mixing one, but it is most definitely a lounge, and a swanky one at that.

Business Trip Time

Going anywhere on a business trip can mean a lot of running around, getting lost, and faceless hotel rooms, but with the entire world (well, New York) at your fingertips, try not to get lost in the shuffle.  Take care of business, but then go play!

The city is extremely friendly to pedestrians and the “grid” makes it fairly easy to find your way around. And because New York is so dense and compact, you never know what you may discover around that corner-a restaurant devoted solely to rice pudding, a travel bookstore, or an organic soap shop. So, turn those corners already!

Getting Businessy

Staples Copy Center

COSI Sandwich Bar

242 West 36th Street Lbby, New York, NY 10018

Free wi-fi, and not a Starbuck’s. How about that?!? If you’re feeling adventurous, order the Make-Them-Yourself S’mores. Watch out for the open flame, however.

Papabubble

380 Broome Street New York, NY 10013

The handmade (right in the store in front of you!) candy store opened its first U.S. outpost in New York. Hard candy, you say? With flavors like passion fruit and chocolate mint, this ain’t your childhood lifesavers.

Pearl River Mart Inc

477 Broadway, New York, NY 10013

I have done all of my holiday shopping at Pearl River, and this once underground Chinese department store is now a favorite of locals and out-of-towners alike. Stock up on origami paper, ceramic dishes, cheap snacks, apparel, and other randomly assorted goods.

FAO Schwarz

767 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10153

It’s where Tom Hanks famously played Heart & Soul on the floor piano, and of course, it’s a gigantic toy store! Several stories tall and almost a block wide, FAO Schwarz has something for everyone, kid or adult. It’s also a good stop for unique New York souvenirs, i.e., not those mini taxi cabs or Statue of Liberty keychains.

*Chelsea Market*

The artsy neighborhood of Chelsea is known for its gallery scene, but it’s also home to the Chelsea Market, an indoor conglomerate of restaurants, shops, and markets.

Some oldies but goodies at the Chelsea Market.

Ninth Street Espresso

75 9th Avenue New York, NY 10011

The famed local coffee venue now has a location in Chelsea Market, so if you’re in between events, stop for a cup o’ joe.

Lobster Place

75 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10011

You probably won’t be buying pounds of fish (smelly!) during your visit, but instead, have lunch or dinner at the Lobster Place and order up a lobster roll. Nope, this isn’t Maine, but New Yorkers like their lobster rolls, so you’ll be getting freshness and quality (and maybe a slight carbon footprint).

It's Half Day Fun Time!!!

You get to skip out early and have hours to galavant!  What to do? Well, it’s impossible to see everything during a few days in New York, but these are some of the shining stars of the city.
