Are you crazy about Shar-Peis? I personally think they are the most wonderful dogs on the planet! If you're a Shar-Pei lover, then you know what I am talking about. I'm an avid dog lover...dogs of all sizes, breeds...all of them, but Shar-Peis are the ultimate in my book! I love their looks, temperament, and absolutely everything about them!
I want to pick up that little munchkin… (BTW, I did that annoying little baby voice in my head as I wrote that comment…)
Beautiful puppy!
Temperament
Regal, alert, intelligent, dignified, lordly, scowling, sober and snobbish essentially independent and somewhat standoffish with strangers, but extreme in his devotion to his family. The Shar-Pei stands firmly on the ground with a calm, confident stature.
In my experience I’ve found this to be true. My Shar-Pei’s are very devoted and will protect from unwanted advances. They are most gentle with children.
Adult Shar-Pei
Shar-Pei as head rest!
The looks have it!
An alert, compact dog of medium size and substance; square in profile, close-coupled; the well proportioned head slightly, but not overly large for the body. The short, harsh coat, the loose skin covering the head and body, the small ears, the “hippopotamus” muzzle shape and the high set tail impart to the Shar-Pei a unique look peculiar to him alone. The loose skin and wrinkles covering the head, neck and body are superabundant in puppies but these features may be limited to the head, neck and withers in the adult.

The Chinese Shar-Pei, an ancient and unique breed, is thought to have originated in the area around the small village of Tai Li in Kwangtung Province, and has existed for centuries in the southern provinces of China, apparently since the Han Dynasty (c. 200 B.C.). Statues bearing a strong resemblance to the Shar-Pei have been discovered and dated to this period. More recently, a Chinese manuscript of the 13th century has been translated; it refers to a wrinkled dog with characteristics much like those of the Shar-Pei. The name “Shar-Pei” itself literally means “sand-skin”, but translated more loosely as “rough, sandy coat” or “sand-paper-like coat” and refers to the two distinctive qualities of the Shar-Pei coat – roughness and shortness - which make the breed unique in the dog world.
A bit older!
Health Warnings! U need money!
Don’t buy a Shar-Pei if you don’t have the means for veterinary fees. Unlike other breeds and especially mutts that are much more physically sound, the Shar-Pei comes with a great deal of medical problems that will need to be addressed. You may get lucky and get one that has been bred well thus avoiding major medical bills, however, many medical problems are genetic and are “part” of the Shar-Pei. Plan on a very minimum of 3k or more over the short lifetime of your pei. My pei’s have run on average about 8k over their life of 7 to 11years.
