The Very Best Sub Shops in Phoenix

One of the most classic American sandwiches comes decorated in a hoagie and served with a garnishment of veggies and condiments. I am talking about none other than the submarine sandwich—a delicate array of meats and cheese, condiments and fresh veggies that offers a distinct taste like no other. Due to my hapless addiction to these meat laden veggie towers, I have had the distinct pleasure of dining and many of the sub shops in Phoenix. In the end I was able to boil it down to the top three, and several notable others. If you are a big fan of eating large hoagies filled with meat and cheese, make sure you check out these sub spots the next time you find yourself in Phoenix, Arizona.

This pizza and sub shop surely takes the cake in my opinion as one of the most authentic, non-franchise submarine sandwich shops in the greater Phoenix area. I will not really get into discussing their pizza with the exception that it is very New York and rare to find such truly thin and tasty NY pizza. However I will delve into why their subs rock so much and why I feel that this place is in the top three for best sub shops in the valley.

Their prices are amazingly low. I dined on the Party Sub Lunch—a three meat humongous submarine sandwich that was decorated with a stack of fresh veggies, my choice of condiments and three different cheeses. Got you hungry yet? The meal came with a bag of chips, my choice, and a large fountain beverage. And guess what, all of this for about $6.

Even though they do not bake their bread fresh here, it is delivered almost daily—so it tastes really good and fresh. Their meats are of the highest qualities and so are their veggies and cheeses. When it comes to making great subs, their staff is well trained and it is clearly demonstrated in the high-quality customer service one receives when dining here. A great little sub shop in a big freaking city!

Stumpy's Pizza

1331 E Northern Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85020

Silly name, serious freaking pizza and subs, and even though I think they have far better subs than pizza, many people out there would greatly disagree with me. But this is why I have included this place in my guide of sub shops and not pizzerias. The best sub here is the Classic Italian—a three meat combo topped with three cheeses and Italian spices—yummy! I do not recommend their pizza as there is nothing I find special about it. However their subs are just marvelous.

Da Chicago Dog & Subs

Old town Chicago is calling your name my friend. And if you are to heed that call accordingly then you must check out Da Chicago Dog and Subs shop in central phoenix. This place is Chicago-awesome and offers the most authentic Chicago styled hotdogs and subs. Better known for their dogs—don’t fret too much—as they happen to have some of the best subs in the valley. If classic, Chicago-Italian flavor is speaking to your tummy, indulge in the authenticity of this small yet classy place.

Lady Bug House of Sandwiches

1611 North 11th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85006

This place has been in central Phoenix for years and years. They specialize in all sorts of vivid sandwich creations. They are best known for their sandwiches; however this does not mean that they do not make an excellent submarine sandwich as well. If you find yourself craving a beautifully stacked sub, adorned with the freshest veggies and meats and cheeses—get a bug for the ladybug and feast your taste buds on a great freaking sandwich!

Located in central Phoenix for many years, the owner of this place, Jim, has striven to great lengths to assure that his many daily and regular customers are given the freshest subs on the planet. They fresh bake their bread daily and you can tell by how fresh it tastes and smells. They only use gourmet meats, which does cause for a pricey eating experience, but also serves as a way to know that you are getting the very best ingredients when you dine here. Great place, great food and service, and decent prizes—even if the location is crumby.

LUV A Sub

3922 East University Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85034

If you love a sub as much as the guys that work here do then you will find your taste buds in heaven when you stop in for a quick bite. They are tucked neatly away in a shoddy complex, but do not let the exterior fool you—these guys know great subs. Whether you crave the classic three-meat Italian sub, or you want one custom created to your tastes—they will make sure you leave with a full stomach and a smile. Not to mention their prices are pretty darn good as well.

Coney Island PITA Subs & Salads

16 West Adams Street, Phoenix, AZ 85003

If a taste of down home New York City is what you are craving, this place has surely got all of your bases covered. They serve both traditional meat-filled pita gyros as well as a wide array of beautifully decorated sub sandwiches. You will not find more authentic gyros in the valley and their subs are comprised of high-quality fresh meat and veggies. Great prices, service with a smile and affordable eats compliment this sub shop.

Located in downtown Phoenix near the Phoenix Superior Courthouse, it can be quite difficult to actually get a seat inside this very well-known and extremely popular sandwich parlor. But when you finally do make your way through the long lines, which diminish quite quickly, you will find that your time was well worth the wait.

Happy employees great you and help you to create the perfect sub sandwich, made fresh right before your very eyes. They then direct you to the toppings section where you are greeted by tons of fresh additions that you can amply top your creation with. Finally, to toast or not to toast is presented to you and then you choose your chips and drink.

All of this will only cost you about $8, and considering the location and the rent they pay monthly, this is great freaking deal. All of that aside, the friendliness of the employees, the fresh ingredients and one of the nicest and cleanest sub shops in the valley all make this place easily fit into the top three for the best subs shops in Phoenix.

This place is one of the better-known sub shops in the valley and it is because of two distinct reasons. One they will deliver subs to your home, not just pizza, provided you meet the minimum order dollar amount required. Two, their subs are just fantastically delicious and they do not cost a whole lot of money. Finally, they have ample selections of good beers on tap, so you have something frothy and malted to wash down that sandwich with; what other sub shops serve beer? Uh, none!

The place is of decent size and both the exterior and the interior are in great shape. Their prices are comparable to the best-priced fast food sub shops in the valley, but this place is clearly not fast food. Rather, they are a smaller Italian pizzeria and subway shop that specializes in making the best pies and subs you will ever chomp into. Other pluses are very fresh meats of high-quality, great cheese selections and good customer service; decent prices also compliment an already great restaurant.
