If you are traveling to New York for a conference at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, this is the guide for you. Find your away around the city, dine at recommended restaurants, and fill your down time with exciting events.
The Big Apple Welcomes You
New York needs no introduction, but it does need an infinite amount of guides to help you navigate what the city has to offer. While it is the most populated of U.S. cities, the island of Manhattan (1 of 5 boroughs) is fairly small, measuring up at only 22 square miles.
While there are the obvious landmarks-Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Stock Exchange, Times Square-New York is much more than these postcard-worthy places! Amidst all of the hustle and bustle are small, intimate restaurants, trendy wine bars, beautiful parks, numerous museums, and one-of-a-kind shops.

The Transportation Basics
There are three major airports servicing the New York area, a bus station, two train stations, and numerous subways, and local buses to get you from one place to another. Pick up maps and schedules wherever you go, and contrary to popular belief, New Yorkers are actually quite friendly and willing to help with directions. Just ask!
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Jfk Airport
1 Jfk Airport, Jamaica, NY 11430
JFK is waaaaay out there in Queens, but the airtrain+Long Island Railroad will get you into the city in about an hour. No traffic because they are both trains!

Laguardia Airport
Laguardia Airport, Flushing, NY 11371
There is public transportation into the city from LaGuardia, but taxis tend to get there pretty fast.

Newark is an $80+ cab ride away from Manhattan, so I recommend NJ transit for making the hike in.

You aren't flying here?
Zipcar: The Fun Way to Rent a Car
I joined zipcar and am never going back to the hassle of regular rental car companies. There are hundreds of zipcars all over the city, and even the gas is paid for!
MTA: Trains, Subways, and Buses
On the MTA’s site, you will find all the maps, schedules, and fare info for commuter trains, underground subways, and all buses.
Dining Out
Hard Rock Cafe and Hawaiian Tropic Zone are nearby, but how about something less chain-y and way more unique?
Dining Out in New York
Grand Central Oyster Bar
Grand Central Terminal, New York, NY 10017
A New York institution that has been around for just shy of 100 years, the Oyster Bar is a must if you like seafood and an old-school (but upscale) feel.

Blt Steak
106 E 57th St, New York, NY 10022
Laurent Tourondel delivers at all of his BLT venues (it stands for Bistro Laurent Tourondel, fyi), but BLT Steak is where you go for a gluttonous, meaty meal. Braised short ribs, Kobe strip steak…go wild!

Spring St Natural Restaurant
62 Spring Street, New York, NY 10012
If you’re looking for a well-sized restaurant with some healthier choices, Spring Street Natural will do the trick. The almond veggie burger is divine, and the menu is nicely balanced with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

Night on the Town
You’ve had a long day and are ready to kick back with a martini in hand. The following nightlife venues are sophisticated, but not stuffy.
Classy Bar-Hopping
Pegu Club
77 W Houston St, New York, NY 10012

Brandy Library Lounge
25 N Moore St, New York, NY 10013
Despite the name, this is not a library, nor does it even have any books, save for the quintessential drink-mixing one, but it is most definitely a lounge, and a swanky one at that.

The Everything Map
Everything in this guide can be found on this here map—what a handy tool with which to plan your New York route!
Business Trip Time
Going anywhere on a business trip can mean a lot of running around, getting lost, and faceless hotel rooms, but with the entire world (well, New York) at your fingertips, try not to get lost in the shuffle. Take care of business, but then go play!
The city is extremely friendly to pedestrians and the “grid” makes it fairly easy to find your way around. And because New York is so dense and compact, you never know what you may discover around that corner-a restaurant devoted solely to rice pudding, a travel bookstore, or an organic soap shop. So, turn those corners already!
Getting Businessy
Staples Copy Center
500 8th Avenue New York, NY 10018
COSI Sandwich Bar
242 West 36th Street Lbby, New York, NY 10018
Free wi-fi, and not a Starbuck’s. How about that?!? If you’re feeling adventurous, order the Make-Them-Yourself S’mores. Watch out for the open flame, however.

Museum of Modern Art Design
81 Spring Street, New York, NY 10012
If you don’t have time for the Museum of Modern Art, take in this sizable “gift shop” in Soho. Pick up an Eames chair for your office back home, or some designery housewares or creative toys.

Papabubble
380 Broome Street New York, NY 10013
The handmade (right in the store in front of you!) candy store opened its first U.S. outpost in New York. Hard candy, you say? With flavors like passion fruit and chocolate mint, this ain’t your childhood lifesavers.
Pearl River Mart Inc
477 Broadway, New York, NY 10013
I have done all of my holiday shopping at Pearl River, and this once underground Chinese department store is now a favorite of locals and out-of-towners alike. Stock up on origami paper, ceramic dishes, cheap snacks, apparel, and other randomly assorted goods.

FAO Schwarz
767 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10153
It’s where Tom Hanks famously played Heart & Soul on the floor piano, and of course, it’s a gigantic toy store! Several stories tall and almost a block wide, FAO Schwarz has something for everyone, kid or adult. It’s also a good stop for unique New York souvenirs, i.e., not those mini taxi cabs or Statue of Liberty keychains.

*Chelsea Market*
The artsy neighborhood of Chelsea is known for its gallery scene, but it’s also home to the Chelsea Market, an indoor conglomerate of restaurants, shops, and markets.
Checking Out Chelsea Market
Ninth Street Espresso
75 9th Avenue New York, NY 10011
The famed local coffee venue now has a location in Chelsea Market, so if you’re in between events, stop for a cup o’ joe.
Lobster Place
75 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10011
You probably won’t be buying pounds of fish (smelly!) during your visit, but instead, have lunch or dinner at the Lobster Place and order up a lobster roll. Nope, this isn’t Maine, but New Yorkers like their lobster rolls, so you’ll be getting freshness and quality (and maybe a slight carbon footprint).

Imports From Marrakesh
88 10th Avenue, New York, NY 10011
So, you didn’t get to go to that exotic locale for your conference, but at least you can return home looking like you did! Imports From Marrakesh specializes in all things Moroccan.

It's Half Day Fun Time!!!
You get to skip out early and have hours to galavant! What to do? Well, it’s impossible to see everything during a few days in New York, but these are some of the shining stars of the city.
Explore New York
Staten Island Ferry
1 Whitehall Street New York, NY 10004
The Staten Island is a fun (and free!) way to see Manhattan from afar. Sail from the tip of Manhattan for 30 minutes across the bay to Staten Island, one of the other five boroughs. Then, come right back! Beer and snacks are available on board.
Guggenheim Museum Solomon R

Get a healthy dose of modern art while in town at Frank Lloyd Wright’s amazing architectural masterpiece.

Central Park
5th Ave & 59th St, Manhattan, NY 10024
Pedal boats, zoo, carriage rides, woodsy walks, Shakespeare garden, waterfalls, Pale Male hawk, you name it and Central Park has probably got it. At 843 acres, you’re bound to find a grassy nook or vacant bench for some serious downtime.

Grand Central Station
87 East 42nd Street New York, NY 10017
A hub for transit, Grand Central is full of history, interesting shops, secrets, and gorgeous architecture. You could easily spend hours in the building, but if you get really board, hop on a Metro-North train for some Hudson River sight-seeing and get a scenic glimpse of where the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts lived.
