The Best Coming-of-Age Movies of the '00s
Ask anyone about their favorite "coming-of-age" movies, and they'll probably mention an '80s movie or four (John Hughes was prolific, to say the least). But truth be told, the first decade of the 21st century has given us some excellent coming-of-age of movies. Who needs Molly Ringwald when you have Michael Cera?
Thumbsucker
Lou Pucci does an awesome job as a thumbsucking teenager in this movie. And while I love Vince Vaughan’s role (he plays the debate team coach), I have to say Keanu Reeves is my favorite in this movie— who doesn’t like a shamanistic orthodontist?
Superbad
Superbad revisited the quintessential coming-of-age movie topic (the high school party where getting laid seems to be the prime objective), and made it ridiculously awesome. But when you have a character who goes by the name of “McLovin” how can it not be awesome?
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
I had REALLY high expectations for this movie, and while it wasn’t entirely what I was expecting, I still thought it was pretty good— things are just bound to be funny when you spend the evening driving around New York City in a bright yellow Yugo.
Rocket Science
Eerily similar to Thumbsucker (both films involve high school debate teams and teenagers who have oral fixation issues), Rocket Science is about a stutterer who gets hoodwinked by a pretty girl into joining the debate team.
Knocked Up
While Seth Rogen and co. are a bit older than the rest of the crowd here, they’re a pretty emotionally stunted bunch (pillow farts?), which gives Knocked Up a genre all its own: the grown-up coming-of-age movie.
Not a 100% foolproof, but pretty reliable when it comes to ratings.
Juno
God bless Diablo Cody for penning an AWESOME coming-of-age movie about a girl— if you didn’t notice, most of these flicks seem to be about teenage boys. But girls can funny and awkward too, you know.
An ode to Juno’s hamburger phone.
The Squid and the Whale
While this movie was more about a family going through a not-so-amicable separation, it was still a coming-of-age movie just the same. While Jesse Eisenberg is the main fixture of the movie, Owen Kline (who plays Eisenberg’s younger brother), is AMAZING.
Saved!
I thought it was pretty appropriate that Macaulay Culkin’s career should be “reborn” in a movie about teenage evangelists. But perhaps even more surprising than Culkin’s comeback was Mandy Moore’s turn as the Jesus-loving Hilary Faye— she was actually REALLY good.
Adventureland
The perfect post-college movie that encompasses the sad, sad fact that despite your having a liberal arts degree in Comparative Literature you are actually qualified to do f—- all and must therefore work at an amusement park instead.
Igby Goes Down
Starring “the other Culkin” (Kieran), Igby Goes Down follows the story of an overprivileged military school delinquent as he tries to rebel against and his family and find himself. Not exactly an original storyline, but good just the same.
The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
Another coming-of-age movie starring Kieran Culkin (perhaps, he’s trying to tell us something?) this one takes place in a Catholic school— I can think of no better setting for a coming-of-age film. And yes, that is Jodie Foster in a nun’s habit.
