Step #1: Pick A Rink

Location is key.  It would probably be wise to pre-skate your locations.
And, remember, the darker the rink the more chance of a make-out.

Side note:  Looking back I realize that the chance of a make-out is why I picked the darker of the two local skating rinks for my Friday, feet full of blisters (but only on your ‘turn’ foot)night.

I never made out with anyone.

I don’t even think I ever really got asked to couple skate.  In fact, I’m pretty sure the boys didn’t even tug on my hand as I whizzed by and slapped the outstretched boy hands during Girls Only Skate.

And now I can’t stop LOL’ing. 

Step #2: Pick an Outfit

I don't remember anyone dressing like this(see above photo)...

...except my Roller Barbie.  Ken had almost the very same outfit. 

Ken. <shaking head> How did you skate in such short shorts?

It might be wise to choose something more comfortable.  How about a pair of (tapered, stonewashed) jeans and a (neon, fringed) t-shirt (with a picture on it of a unicorn or maybe a cat).

Don’t forget to (tight) roll your jeans if they are too long!

And yes. I am a member of the “I tight rolled my jeans from 7th through right before 9th grade” club.  And, hey, Katie Holmes just rocked it the other day.  This fashion statement could be making a (short-lived) return.

Step #3: Pick your skates

Unless you own a pair(of skates, people. SKATES!) you will have to rent ‘em.
  
Will they match your (Step#2 Pick Your) Outfit?  Unlikely. 
 
Will you be slightly disgusted at the thought of the bazillions of pairs of sweaty feet that have been in them before yours?  Most Definately.

Will they not quite lace tight enough? Or have a really crappy stopper?  Or have wheels that spin so fast you can’t help but hurtle uncontrollably towards walls and/or other people? Yes. Absolutely.
   

For the picky skater...

...skate covers!!!  I mean, yeah, they just screamed total skate coolness.  

A girl in my high school is related to the people who owned one of the local rinks(the dark, good for the making out rink..not the rink that always played organ music).   She always covered her skates with skate covers. 

Me?  Practically green with envy. 

Step #4: Pick your tune or Pick your seat.

But don’t pick your friends seat.

The 80-er, the hair-ee-er, the glam rock band-ee-er the bett-er. And I’m talking about your tune choice here…not your friends seat.

Step #5 Pick your lesson

Knowing how to skate is key.  You should be holding your partners (sweaty) hand for romance, not for support.

For the couples skate novice a simple side-by-side method is the way to go.

But, if you’re able to skate backwards, you best bring out the big guns!   It’s the TRUE way to skate a couples skate. 

And, don’t forget to talk about the bummer test in Math class…or the how much you love ‘Breakfast for Lunch’ day.

Be sure to trust your partner to steer you in the right direction on your romantic circle around the rink.
