Colored lights
Growing up, our tree always had colored lights. And considering that our tree was covered with ornaments made by me, my brother, and sister, as well as other kid-themed ornaments, it worked: Christmas, and therefore the tree, was pretty much all about us kids.
Not JUST colored lights
But colored lights filled with bubbling water. THAT is the look of Christmas. That, and the site of your house burning down because these lights are really, really hot.

Blue Lights = Emo Christmas
Can we all agree that blue lights are kind of spooky? They make me want to put on lots of eyeliner and sit around moping. Mind you, there’s not a lot in the world that DOESN’T make me want to do that.

Crochet Lights!
That are completely useless because they don’t serve the inherent lighting purpose that most lights do. But whatever, I made them and love them and they smile!!!

White lights
Today, in my own home, I use white lights. I love the look, and since I decorate the tree with a mish-mash of sentimental ornaments and things that don’t match at all, it makes it look somewhat pulled together.
Fanning the flames:
“White lights are high-class; colored lights are somewhat less so. White lights make the statement that one is a refined sort who appreciates that less is more and who celebrates Christmas (and life in general) in such a fashion that one would not be absolutely mortified if Martha Stewart dropped by unexpectedly for tea. Colored lights make the statement that one is the sort of person who believes that Christmas is not Christmas without an electric sled and reindeer on the lawn, an electric Santa on the roof, an electric Frosty by the front gate and an electric Very Special Person in a manger on the porch.”
I have to agree with the white lights— I just love those white icicle lights (in moderation of course— I know, it sounds like I’m channeling Martha Stewart.)
