Coffee Alternatives for The Coffee Sluts Of The World
I can't believe I am about to say this... I need to lay off the coffee for a while. I know, I know it's a shocker! Frankly, it's just not working like it used to. I am more addicted to the taste of coffee, rather than the much needed caffeine injections. Plus, my stomach needs a break! So, I've been trying some other caffeinated and non-caffeinated alternatives. Yet, still having my usual cup of coffee in the morning. Hey, I didn't say I was GIVING UP Coffee! THAT would be ludicrous!
Yerba Mate
Mate has to be one of my favorite substitutions for coffee because it has greater effects on the body, yet you can still be awake to feel them!
Something true…
Mate is slightly more potent than coffee and gentler on the stomach. It tastes a little grassy, and is definitely an acquired taste.
Something else true: It also has a relaxing effect on smooth muscle tissue, and unlike coffee, it is good for the heart.
YES! It’s good for ya.
Black Tea
The next best thing, other than coffee! In my opinion, black tea is just about as affective as coffee in the caffeine department. Plus, it’s less harsh on the stomach.
When I was in London, all I drank was black tea. Specifically, PG Tips. They sell this everywhere there! You can buy this in the States as well. Now when I drink black tea, I think of London. So I’m doing my body AND my mind a favour!
Chai Tea
This spicy goodness adds a kick to my day and tastes even better with soy milk. It’s a nice alternative to a latte!
IF and only IF you decide to go to Starbucks… I would recommend getting a no water chai. You get more chai for your buck and it will be less diluted.
Add Grains To Your Day
If you don’t like tea, try grains instead. Yes, I thought grains instead of beans sounded ridiculous at first and I turned my nose up before I tried it.
Actually, it tastes very similar to coffee and I forgot I was drinking grains. It can be made in espresso form as well, so you can still have your lattes if you so desire.
There are several brands, but Teeccino seems to be the best one out there. Just try it, I wouldn’t steer you in the wrong direction, ok.
Chocolate Substitiute
Carob is naturally sweet. I had no idea what this was until my friend made brownies with this stuff. In case your wondering….
It is ground, roasted beans from the pods of a Mediterranean evergreen leguminous tree. (Yeah, I have no idea what that is but it’s tasty!)
This is a great cocoa and chocolate substitute and has no caffeine, no fat, and is already naturally sweet.
Oprah should have discovered this a long time ago! Hahah beat ya to it!
Still Addicted?
Yeah, me too. That’s OK! There’s nothing wrong with the java. Nothing at all! Heck, I might even go make some coffee right now. I’ve drank nothing but tea all day.
Drink Mate From A Straw!
Mate is good for you, keeps you awake, and you can drink it from a straw! See… coffee alternatives can be fun!
You can get a complimentary monkey when you buy a box! I’m not kidding!! That’s just one of the perks of PG Tips. You can even have conversations over a cup if you’re crazy like me!
Green Tea
Got a headache from caffeine withdraws? Never fear, green tea is here!!
I’ve been drinking a lot of this lately when I crave a cup of coffee. It keeps me healthy and still has a tad bit of caffeine in it. Not nearly as much as coffee, but you’ll feel healthier. Even after one cup!
Signs That Tell You You're Addicted To Coffee
- You have headaches when not drinking a beloved cup of coffee.
- Your stomach begins to turn over on itself when you do drink coffee.
- You can’t stop thinking about coffee for days, weeks, or moths after you stop drinking it.
- You have dreams about coffee.
- You add coffee into your daily routine.
- You name your child or animal names that have to do with coffee such as: Java, bean, cappuccino, frothy, or espresso.
- You have more than one coffee maker and bags of beans in your freezer, just in case you run out.
Rooibos Tea
This has to be my all time favorite red tea. It is smooth, creamy, and has a sweet taste naturally..
Sorry, no caffeine in this one. It’s all herbal.
Dandelion Root Tea
When I was a kid I used to take dandelions and rub them on my hands to make them turn yellow. I know, I was a strange child. Guess what though, you can drink it too!
No, you’re not exactly drinking the yellow part of the dandelion, but the root. It’s a little bitter at the first swig and it’s not exactly my favorite, but if you like your coffee a little bitter, you’re in luck!
Benefits: Helps promote weight loss. Yeah, that’s right… dandelions can be used for more than just making your skin yellow!
