Spending a couple of days in Seattle with the family? Here's a list of a few activities that your entire family will enjoy.

So we took the plunge and took the kids to Seattle for a mini-vacation. Between the gazillion museums, amazing scenery and turn-of-the century neighborhoods, Seattle is a great place for a family vacation. Hands down, one of the best places to hang out was the Pike Place Market where we could spend hours just people watching and of course eating (plus it is free!).

Flowers at the Pike Place Market…and to think I was there on my anniversary and walked away with nothing.

Pike Place Market

85 Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101

I’m a big believer in farmer markets, especially since I don’t want my kids thinking that all food is grown in the grocery store. This market is a gem and has a little bit of everything from flowers to fish to fresh produce. It can get very crowded (your stroller may cause a traffic jam) during the weekends so try to go during the week or early in the morning on the weekends.

“Take me to your leader…”, the talking fish at Pike Place Fish.

Pike Place Fish Market Inc

Seattle, WA 98101

This is the place to go to see the “flying fish” where workers fling fish back and forth. If you stay long enough, the fish may talk.

Daily Dozen Donut CO

93 Pike Street 7, Seattle, WA 98101

For less than $3, you can get a dozen hot donuts from an automatic donut maker that fries them right before your eyes. And if you are lucky enough, the server will juggle them into your bag before you pay. It’s a good thing the donuts are miniature size so you won’t feel guilty eating the entire dozen. These donuts are not for savoring so eat them while they are hot.

The original Starbucks at Pike Place Market

Starbucks Coffee

221 Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101

The original Starbucks is at Pike Place Market. There is always a line here so the only thing I go away with was the picture.

Crumpet Shop Teas the

Pike Place Market, Seattle, WA 98101

Everyone told me I had to have a crumpet. Now that I’ve had one, I still have mixed reviews on it. If you have to slather it with butter and then drench it with sugar, why not just have a piece of chocolate cake? The kids liked them especially when their “stiff pancakes” were drenched with jelly.

My kids loved touching slimy things at the Aquarium but I can’t get them to clean my toilet.

Seattle Aquarium

1483 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98101

Great aquarium with interactive areas including several large touch tanks. Save some money and purchase a combo ticket to the aquarium and for the Argosy Cruises.

Enjoying the view from the Argosy Cruise.

Argosy Cruises

1101 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98101

You know that tourist trap where they take your picture before you get on the boat? Well, this is it. However, the hour long tour was interesting and gave brief history on Seattle with some great views that we would not have otherwise seen. And yes, we did buy the picture.

Curiosity Shop Ye Olde

1001 Alaskan Way Pier 54, Seattle, WA 98104

On the pier by Argosy Cruises, this shop offers every kind of trinket you might need (yes, this is the place to buy bags of rocks and shrunken heads). They also display a collection of very unusual dead things like animals and some petrified mummies named Sylvie and Sylvester (if your kids scare easily, you may want to avoid the back of the store).

Seattle Center

305 Harrison St, Seattle, WA 98109

The site of the original world’s fair, the Seattle Center is a large park home to the famous Space Needle and many museums including the Children’s Museum, Pacific Science Center, Science Fiction Museum and Experience Music Project. Even if you don’t go to any museums this park is a must see. It is a great place to spend a few hours running around fountains, riding the carousel, walking through the gardens or eating at the indoor food court (plus the bathrooms were clean).

Kids will love watching butterflies and moths at the Pacific Science Center.

Pacific Science Center

200 2nd Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109

Great museum with lots of hands-on exhibits including dinosaurs, small touch tank and a play area geared just for toddlers. The Butterfly Pavilion was a big hit where they could wander around and try to feed the butterflies. The museum is part of the ASTC network, so if you are a member of any participating museum you will receive free admission.

The Children's Museum Seattle

305 Harrison St, Seattle, WA 98109

Need a place to burn off energy when the weather is bad (or even if its good), then hit the Children’s Museum. Climb, jump and run…a great place to explore. Geared for children under the age of 10.

Museum of Flight

The Museum of Flight

9404 E Marginal Way S, Seattle, WA 98108

Tour an old concord, sit in the seat of a fighter plane or try to land a hand-glider, the Museum of Flight is fun and informative. The original Boeing Factory is now part of the museum with many interesting artifacts. The on-site restaurant is reasonably priced and offered some healthy choices.

Keep your kids entertained at any of these attractions

Woodland Park Zoo

601 N 59th St, Seattle, WA 98103

Ok, I’ll have to admit that we ran out of time and didn’t make it to the zoo; it was on the list but we were on kid time (you know need to stop every 5 minutes for a snack or a bathroom). This heavily wooded zoo showcases animals as well as many native plants and shrubs. They even offer a “rainy day tour”.

The freaky “Troll Under the Bridge”...we told the kids if they didn’t behave he was going to be their babysitter.

Fremont

Seattle, WA

For endless array of questions from your kids, stop by to see the “Troll Under the Bridge” in the Fremont neighborhood. This giant-size troll is crushing a VW Beetle and is a perfect place to explore and have your kids ask you…
- Why does he only have one eye?
- Why is he holding a car?
- How come he lives under a bridge?
- What does eat for dinner?
- Where does he sleep?

Tips on Saving Dough...

There is a lot to do in Seattle but here are some ways to save your money….

  • CityPass – For a set prices ($44 Adults; $29 Children) you can see five attractions including the Seattle Aquarium, Argosy Cruises Seattle Harbor Tour, Pacific Science Center, Woodlands Park Zoo and the Museum of Flight OR Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum.
  • Seattle Aquarium/Argosy Cruise Discount – You can receive a discount on the both attractions by purchasing a combination ticket at the Aquarium.
  • Museum Memberships – Check your museum or zoo memberships and find out if they are part of a larger network. The membership from our local science museum allowed us to go to the Pacific Science Center for free.
  • Coupon Search – Do a Google search for the museums you might be visiting for for any possible coupons or discounts. I found a couple for the Museum of Flight.

VPC Corpse Flower

Widget_dsyzzabuhnn6sjyp4ofmli

This specimen of Titan arum, or “Corpse Flower” as it is also known, was bloomed from seed at Volunteer Park Conservatory several years ago, and gets its strange name from the flower’s smell, which is reminiscent of a decomposing animal.

This place is a year-round oasis of tropical greenery, something I find especially helpful in coping with the wet gray winters around here. There’s also plenty of places to just sit and soak it all in. Best part—it’s free! If you can make it, at 2pm on Saturdays they feed the carnivorous plants, and are more than happy to have outsiders join in on the fun.
