So you're in the birthplace of jazz and having trouble finding where to hear it? Take a walk through the French Quarter and open your ears! Of course, some places are better than others, and some jazz groups are better, as well. Next time you're in the Big Easy, check out a few of my favorite speakeasies if you're looking to swing all night.
You’d have a hard time finding a smaller place with more people packed inside than the Spotted Cat when a good band is playing. Put on your dancing shoes and stop by on a Monday or Friday night to see the New Orleans Jazz Vipers!

Thursday night at Vaughan’s Lounge has become a 15-year tradition for many New Orleans residents thanks to Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers. As their name suggests, you may want to come with a nice appetite as Kermit, one of the nation’s premier trumpeters, is almost as skilled on the grill as he is with a horn.

Being a local, I tend to avoid Bourbon Street whenever possible. However, if I do happen to be walking in the area, I make it a point to stop by and listen to whatever talent they happen to have playing that night.

Forgive me for the lack of a link, but cruise uptown to 8316 Oak St one Tuesday night and check out the Rebirth Brass Bands. This lively group, co-founded by the famous Kermit Ruffins, has grown in popularity to become one of the most famous brass bands from New Orleans.
While I wouldn’t recommend stopping by WWOZ if you want to hear some live Jazz music, tuning in with your radio is a great way to get in touch with the local Jazz scene. WWOZ is a non-profit radio station dedicated to Jazz and local artists, as well as New Orleans culture. Don’t be surprised if one of your favorite jazz musicians drops by the studio unannounced to play a few live tunes while you’re listening.
