Besides the whole milk chocolate-dark chocolate debate, chocolate lovers everywhere know that they need to forget saving money for retirement, Christmas or vacation. They know they need to save their money for April. Homer does say it best: Mmm... Chocolate.

The Best Chocolate Ever

  • Dove Truffle Eggs.  Ahhhh.  Only found during Easter, these gems are the most precious cargo a chocolate lover can attain.
  • In Colorado, they are only found in Walgreens and King Soopers.
  • If you see them at Safeway or Albertsons, you have discovered an anomaly in the chocolate universe, soon to be followed by armageddon.

January

  • January is easy.
  • You still have leftover chocolate from the holiday season and you can easily get chocolate for Valentine’s Day.
  • No danger of running out here.

February

  • Valentine’s Day is really for the chocolate lovers.
  • It is one of the biggest chocolate days of the year, however, there is not much variety.
  • A chocolate lover has been able to enjoy 6 months of a bountiful chocolate harvest.
  • Enjoy it while it lasts.

March

  • Again, March is easy because you still have leftover chocolate from Valentine’s day and you can easily get chocolate for Easter.
  • Sometimes, a chocolate lover can get lucky with finding some quality chocolate for St. Patrick’s Day, but save your money for April.

April

  • Easter, the pinnacle of the chocolate year.
  • The only time of the year you can find the highly coveted Dove Truffle Eggs.
  • There are lots of other chocolate goodies a chocolate lover can enjoy like chocolate bunnies, Cadbury cream eggs, Brach’s Robin Eggs and Reese’s peanut butter eggs.
  • You have a long haul coming up, so buy like it is going out of style.
  • You have a 4 month dry spell after Easter, so plan well.
  • Stores that carry Dove Truffle Eggs do not restock their best inventory once they run out, so my advice is to clean out the store whenever you find them.
  • They restock most of their inventory on the other chocolates, but not with Dove Truffle Eggs.
  • The chocolate industry is trying to branch out, so a chocolate lover may get lucky for Mother’s Day, Flag Day, or The Queen’s Birthday in New Zealand, but you have got to plan ahead.

Scoring the best chocolate

  • The day after a holiday, chocolate prices are reduced by 50% and is a good time to replenish more than half of your chocolate stash.
  • Two or more days after a holiday, chocolate prices are reduced much more than 50%, but don’t hold out for these prices.
  • Two or more days after a holiday has some problems:  The good chocolate has already been picked over, the chocolate may be pulled off the shelves after the first day, and never ever wait till after Easter for Dove Truffle Eggs.
  • This is why I suggested buying to replenish more than half of your chocolate stash the very next day after a holiday.

May through August

  • No man’s land for chocolate.
  • Even the most avid chocolate lover can get a little tired of chocolate after enjoying an 8 month long chocolate season, so May isn’t that tough to endure.
  • June is where you start plundering your stores from April.
  • July is where you start to panic as the supply lines run dry.
  • August is where you start buying any kind of crappy candy bar you can find and search the internet for other countries national or religious holidays desperate for a glimmer of descent chocolate to be found!

September

  • Woo Hoo!  Halloween candy!
  • All of your planning and waiting and chocolate starvation has paid off!
  • Throw all caution to the wind!
  • Your diligence has rewards.
  • Enjoy!

October

  • The smorgasbord continues!
  • There doesn’t have to be any kids nor trick or treating involved to gorge yourself on Halloween candy.

November

  • Thanksgiving is not a huge chocolate holiday, but the chocolate industry is branching out.
  • Plus Thanksgiving is between Halloween and Christmas, so enjoy!

December

  • The holiday season.
  • It seems like just about every religion has a chocolate representation in December.
  • Even the religion of chocolate (one would think).

Famous Chocolate

  • There are two famous chocolate movies.
  • The one for kids is obviously Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
  • Most people agree that the first one was better, but hey, chocolate is chocolate.
  • Real chocolate lovers were upset by Charlie winning the prize at the end because Augustus Gloop is the only real chocolate lover in the bunch.
  • The one for grown ups is Chocolat.
  • Strangely, Johnny Depp is the lead in both movies.
  • Chocolat is a sensual chocolate movie that does wonders for promoting the lovers love.

The best places to score your fix.

  • Walgreens: A large variety of hard to find and old school chocolate.  Plus, they tend to be cheaper than the grocery stores on the same stuff.
  • Grocery Stores: Your regular run of the mill grocery stores have a good variety of brand name chocolate.
  • Warehouse Grocers: Warehouse stores like Costco and Sam’s Club have a limited choice in chocolate, but in bags bigger than your head.
  • Discount Stores: Stores like Big Lots, Dollar General and your plain dollar stores tend to carry chocolate you have never heard of.  Plus, they don’t carry bulk or big bags of chocolate.

I guess there is a distinction to be made between a chocolate lover as described in this guide, and a chocolate connoisseur who wouldn’t be caught dead buying the chocolate swill from a grocery store. A guide for the chocolate connoisseur will be forthcoming.

Anything tastes better dipped in chocolate. I like going for the chocolate dipped in chocolate, myself.
