Chill Out: Beating the Heat in the Bay Area

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

Mark Twain once said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." While it never gets as hot as Arizona or Florida or the Surface of the Sun around here, it can get uncomfortable and sticky. Just because we rarely get to triple digit temperatures doesn't mean we don't deserve a way to cool off when it does get super hot. Check out some great ways to cool down in the Bay Area

Splish Splash

Get Wet

One of the best and fastest ways to stay cool on a hot day is to submerge yourself in water and stay that way until the sun goes down. But what if you’re not lucky enough to own a pool and too old to run in the sprinklers? Lucky for you, the Bay Area has got you covered.

Waterworld USA

1950 Waterworld Pkwy, Concord, CA 94520

One of my favorite water parks in the Bay Area. The slides are decent enough, but it has an amazing lazy river. There is a lot to be said about dropping $30 a head to let an endless loop of water carry you around on an inflatable doughnut. When I go to Waterworld I think I spend about 60% of my time floating on the lazy river.

If you can’t visit, this pretty much simulates the experience. Just splash some water on your face while you watch.

Raging Waters San Jose

2333 S White Rd, San Jose, CA 95148

A great water park in the heart of the South Bay. It’s not super new, or super well stocked, but you can go and ride some great water slides and get yourself way wet. They have some great slides, including one called “Shotgun Falls” which drops you significantly above the landing pool so you fall into the water.

Cannon Ball!

Benicia Pool

7469 Bernice Ave. Rohnert Park, CA 94928

The thing that you need to understand about Rohnert Park is that it is divided up into “sections.” Each section is identified with a letter, and that letter starts every street name, the name of the school, the name of the park, and in lucky cases, the name of the pool. Benicia Pool lived square in B section. B section wasn’t in the nicest neighborhood, so for a kid living in C section (and later in a condo in G section) the only reason to go to B pool was for the crazy high dive. They took it out of the pool for safety reasons when I was 12, so I can only imagine that it was about 6,000 ft. above the water line. They replaced it with a water slide, which is cool, I guess.

High Dive

Jakes's first jump off the high dive!

B Pool’s high dive was WAY higher than this. You had to climb much higher than an adult could reach you, because I remember being scared out of my mind and knowing that the only way down was…well…off the edge.

Windsor Waterworks

8225 Conde Lane Windsor, CA 95492

Ah, the water park destination of my youth. We’d go here five times a summer, and despite the fact that there were only three slides (not counting the children’s slide) we’d spend all day there laughing and sliding. Why? Because it was close and going down waterslides is fun. You don’t need a lot of variety when it comes to the fantastic combination of dark, fast and wet. Fun fact: When I was young and amoral, my friend and I would take his little brother to the waterpark. Little Kevin would run ahead and we’d chase after him. We’d catch up fifteen or twenty people up the line and then look all sad that we’d have to go back to the start. People would feel bad and let us stand with then. Good times!

Other Heat Beating Tips

Maybe you can’t go out. Maybe you’re stuck at home for a little while. Here are a couple quick tips to keep you cool.

  1. Hydrate. Drink lots of water and ice tea and the like. The colder the better. It’ll drop your body temperature.
  2. Open the windows early in the morning to let the cool air in, then close them when it starts getting warm. This will trap the cool air inside. It seems crazy to keep the windows shut on a hot day, but if it’s hotter outside than in, you’ll just be letting the hot air in.
  3. Take a cold shower to disperse some of the heat you’ve built up. You’ll feel a lot better.

Burrrrr

Go Someplace Cool

Just because most homes in the Bay Area don’t have air conditioning doesn’t mean that air conditioning doesn’t exist somewhere. Here are some great places that will be nice and chill on a hot day.

Stonestown Galleria

3251 20th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94132

While it’s not the flashiest mall in San Francisco, it has everything you need while still having a large free parking lot. It’s close to SFSU, so there will be a grip of college students milling about, but when don’t you see that at a mall? All that you need to know is that it’s large enough for you to kill an hour or two, and it’s well air conditioned.

So dark, so cool

AMC Mercado

3111 Mission College Blvd. Santa Clara, CA 95054

Going to see a movie is always a great idea on a hot day. Dark room, blasting AC, Icees. It’s hard to go wrong. But movies can be pretty pricey these days. AMCs offer $6 movies before noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the Mercado has a layout that is…conductive for going from one movie theater to another. I’m not saying you should theater hop, but if you are going to theater hop, this would be an alright place to do it.

Computer History Museum

1401 N Shoreline Blvd, Mountain View, CA 94043

Another great place to stay cool and get out of the sun, the Computer History Museum is quite a bit off the beaten path so you don’t have to worry about it being too crowded, and you most likely have never been there, so you’ll learn something. They have examples of early computers, as well as newer things. Because so much computer history has occurred in Silicone Valley, they have all kinds of remarkable artifacts of one of the most life changing technologies ever created. It’s especially worth visiting for all you Mac fans out there, because both Jobs and The Woz have donated some of their very first projects. It’s like coming home to the mothership.

Borders Books & Music

50 University Avenue 280, Los Gatos, CA 95030

My favorite lazy summer day activity is to take my iPod down to the local Borders and read a big stack of Graphic Novels. The guys at my local comic book store hated it when I did this, but oh well. It’s a nice way to stay cool, read some good comic books and save money all at the same time. It can’t miss.

Ikea

1700 E Bayshore Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94303

I know this seems like an odd choice, but you can’t beat Ikea for a temperature cool place to hang out. If you’ve never been, it’s like Disneyland for home decoration. They set up all kinds of fake living spaces in little dioramas. You can spend hours wandering around the showroom alone. But wait! There’s more! You can duck downstairs for dirt cheap housewares. Be careful! All those $5-$10 deals add up super quick. Also, make sure you check out the snack bar. The upstairs restaurant has the best Swedish Meatballs on the planet, where as the lower snack bar has hot dogs cheaper than you can get at the Costco snack bar. VALUE!

Lighthouse Field State Beach

Apparently, this is where surfing first came to mainland America. Yay history!

Lighthouse Field State Beach

701 W Cliff Dr., Santa Cruz, CA 95060

You may be wondering why the beach is filed under “go someplace cool” instead of “get wet.” If you are wondering such a thing, I know you aren’t from Northern California. The Earth would need to move closer to the sun before I even considered sticking more than a toe into the frigid churl we laughingly call “the ocean.” Ever Bay Area child is repeatedly warned about how dangerous the ocean is. You can’t swim in it, you can’t turn your back on it, you can’t taunt it. It will kill you when you least expect it and then a shark will eat your body.

That being said, it’s always a lot colder near the beach than it is further inland. Even in the dead of summer you can expect to wear a sweater. It can get pretty windy, so be ready to bail and return to the sweet warmth of home.
