I've heard the human mind cannot retain memories until language can be used to describe, and therefore categorize the events at hand. Whether its the story of a broken bone, or the pungent smell from inside Grandma's purse, everyone's got one of those eerily vivid first memories. What's yours?
Dislocating My Elbow: Age 2.5
I remember every second of it: The joyful Tarzanian swinging from my parents’ arms, gripping the velour on the inside of my Aunt’s 1986 Buick Rivierra on the way to the ER, the banana popsicle I received once the elbow was back in socket, etc.
Stealing A Balloon From The Drug Store: Age 3
I told the cashier, Flavio that I found it on the ground outside. He told my dad I could have it, but my dad paid for it anyway. I was only stealing it for my mom for her birthday!
Incidentally, Flavio still works at the same drug store, 21 years later.
Getting In Trouble For Biting My Newborn Sister On The Head: Age 2.5
She had one of those cute little peach-heads with a soft red fuzz on it, and everyone was paying way too much attention to her. I also remember that when she was born, I was convinced that I was being given away to my grandparents, and I cried outside until my tears froze in the fluffy lining of my hood.
An experimental film by Jeff Scher.
