Childhood Pets: I Never Got a Pony, But I Had the Best Dog Ever

Who doesn't remember their first pet? The animals they grew up with? I'm still convinced it's our first pets that will always be the best...or at least the most memorable. What kind of pet did you have growing up? And why was he or she the best pet ever? Or um, the worst? Seriously, frogs are so not cool with me anymore.

Collie Dog

My little collie dog, Peaches, was the best dog in the world. She put up with my annoying self as I dressed her in hats, sunglasses, scarves, and more. She was right by my side every time I cried (and I was a huge crybaby). She was the most calm, loving, and easy-going dog I’ve ever known.

She died when I was 11 in what is probably still the most traumatic event of my life. I still think about her all the time and wish she was still around. It’s because of Peachy that I have such a huge love for dogs. Some day I will have another collie, though I know she’ll never be as amazing as Peachy was.

Frogs

I had two frogs in my childhood. One was of the Grow A Frog mail-away variety and lasted about a day past tadpole stage. The other was the aftermath of a 5th grade science project. It escaped under my bed once and then died just a couple days later. And I was stuck with a dozen disgusting chirping crickets.

I am no longer a big fan of frogs as pets.

Goldfish

My older sister won a bunch of goldfish at some fair. She got bored of taking care of them and convinced herself that she was an unfit mother. So she flushed them all down the toilet alive.

I screamed and screamed at her and cried for two days straight. I called her a murderer. How dare she kill innocent goldfish. She told me she did it for their own good. I’m still scarred.

Larry, Curly and Moe

The first pets I remember having were three gray cats (similar to this dude) named Larry, Curly & Moe. At the time I was 4 and had no idea that those were pretty funny names. And ironic considering those cats were kind of mean and not very funny at all.

Boston
I love cupcakes, the color pink, writing, technology, blogging, trying to learn Japanese, and walking from one end of Boston to the other. I make it my goal to try one new thing in Boston every week, but sometimes I find things I love so much, I just can't tear myself away from them. Boston...
